Many of them could have joined the vast majority of Americans who live in cities and suburbs. They could live closer to more lucrative careers and convenient shopping, a wider range of educational opportunities, and more robust health care. But they have opted to live differently. In Small-Town America, we meet factory workers, shop owners, retirees, teachers, clergy, and mayors--residents who show neighborliness in small ways, but who also worry about everything from school closings and their children's futures to the ups and downs of the local economy. Drawing on more than seven hundred in-depth interviews in hundreds of towns across America and three decades of census data, Robert Wuthnow shows the fragility of community in small towns. He covers a host of topics, including the symbols and rituals of small-town life, the roles of formal and informal leaders, the social role of religious congregations, the perception of moral and economic decline, and the myriad ways residents in small towns make sense of their own lives. Wuthnow also tackles difficult issues such as class and race, abortion, homosexuality, and substance abuse. Small-Town America paints a rich panorama of individuals who reside in small communities, finding that, for many people, living in a small town is an important part of self-identity. 606 $aCities and towns$zUnited States 606 $aCommunities$zUnited States 610 $aRepublicans. 610 $aSuzanne Keller. 610 $aabortion. 610 $aagriculture. 610 $aantipathy. 610 $aathletics. 610 $abig government. 610 $abureaucracy. 610 $acareer opportunities. 610 $acaring. 610 $achildren. 610 $achurch closure. 610 $acivic responsibilities. 610 $aclass. 610 $acollege. 610 $acommunity life. 610 $acommunity spirit. 610 $acommunity ties. 610 $acommunity. 610 $acreationism. 610 $aeconomic decline. 610 $aeducation. 610 $aeducators. 610 $aemployment. 610 $aethnic diversity. 610 $aevolution. 610 $afamily. 610 $afrog-pond effect. 610 $afuture planning. 610 $agentry. 610 $agrassroots activism. 610 $ahigher education. 610 $ahomecoming festivals. 610 $ahomosexuality. 610 $aimmigration. 610 $ajob opportunities. 610 $aleaders. 610 $aleadership. 610 $aliving standards. 610 $aloyalty. 610 $amembership criteria. 610 $ametropolitan areas. 610 $amoney. 610 $amoral decline. 610 $anature. 610 $aneighborliness. 610 $aneighbors. 610 $aparents. 610 $apensioners. 610 $apolitics. 610 $apopulation decline. 610 $apopulism. 610 $apublic officials. 610 $aracial diversity. 610 $areligion. 610 $areligious buildings. 610 $areligious congregations. 610 $areligious organizations. 610 $areligious participation. 610 $arespect. 610 $aritual. 610 $aschool curriculum. 610 $aself-identity. 610 $aservice class. 610 $aslow pace. 610 $asmall towns. 610 $asmall-town life. 610 $asocial innovation. 610 $asocial networks. 610 $asocial strata. 610 $asocioeconomic status. 610 $astereotypes. 610 $asustainable energy. 610 $atechnology. 610 $aterritory. 610 $atownspeople. 610 $avoluntary organizations. 610 $awageworkers. 610 $awelfare. 610 $awork. 610 $ayoung people. 615 0$aCities and towns 615 0$aCommunities 676 $a307.760973 700 $aWuthnow$b Robert$0882687 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910779412703321 996 $aSmall-town America$93733745 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01887nas 2200529-a 450 001 996203000303316 005 20240413012220.0 035 $a(CKB)954921373672 035 $a(CONSER)---85644613- 035 $a(EXLCZ)99954921373672 100 $a20760823b19761999 --- a 101 0 $aeng 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aBest's review 205 $aProperty/casualty insurance ed. 210 $a[Oldwick, N.J.] $c[A.M.
