The region has also experienced dramatic-if uneven-human rights improvements. The accounts of how Latin America's people have dealt with the persistent threats to their fundamental rights offer lessons for people around the world.Human Rights in Latin America: A Politics of Terror and Hope is the first textbook to provide a comprehensive introduction to the human rights issues facing an area that constitutes more than half of the Western Hemisphere. Leading human rights researcher and educator Sonia Cardenas brings together regional examples of both terror and hope, emphasizing the dualities inherent in human rights struggles. Organized by three pivotal topics-human rights violations, reform, and accountability-this book offers an authoritative synthesis of research on human rights on the continent. From historical accounts of abuse to successful transnational campaigns and legal battles, Human Rights in Latin America explores the tensions underlying a vast range of human rights initiatives. In addition to surveying the roles of the United States, relatives of the disappeared, and truth commissions, Cardenas covers newer ground in addressing the colonial and ideological underpinnings of human rights abuses, emerging campaigns for disability and sexuality rights, and regional dynamics relating to the International Criminal Court.Engagingly written and fully illustrated, Human Rights in Latin America creates an important niche among human rights and Latin American textbooks. Ample supplementary resources-including discussion questions, interdisciplinary reading lists, filmographies, online resources, internship opportunities, and instructor assignments-make this an especially valuable text for use in human rights courses. 410 0$aPennsylvania studies in human rights. 606 $aHuman rights$zLatin America 606 $aPolitical persecution$zLatin America 606 $aGovernment accountability$zLatin America 610 $aHuman Rights. 610 $aLaw. 610 $aPolitical Science. 615 0$aHuman rights 615 0$aPolitical persecution 615 0$aGovernment accountability 676 $a323.098 700 $aCardenas$b Sonia$0478766 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910779363803321 996 $aHuman rights in Latin America$93848897 997 $aUNINA LEADER 00442nam 2200181z- 450 001 9910741354803321 005 20251116143415.0 035 $a(CKB)5580000000652109 035 $a(EXLCZ)995580000000652109 100 $a20230912c2023uuuu -u- - 101 0 $aeng 200 10$aAbdominal Trauma 210 $cIntechOpen 311 08$a1-80355-812-1 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910741354803321 996 $aAbdominal Trauma$93556752 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02081nam 2200553 a 450 001 9910969299803321 005 20251117082410.0 010 $a1-61668-571-9 035 $a(CKB)2550000000010777 035 $a(EBL)3020033 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000410859 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12153456 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000410859 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10353326 035 $a(PQKB)11742314 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3020033 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3020033 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10675041 035 $a(OCoLC)923662584 035 $a(BIP)27098611 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000000010777 100 $a20090623d2009 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aAcademic administration $ea quest for better management and leadership in higher education /$fSheying Chen, editor 205 $a1st ed. 210 $aNew York $cNova Science Publishers, Inc.$dc2009 215 $a1 online resource (327 p.) 225 1 $aEducation in a competitive and globalizing world series 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 08$a1-60741-732-4 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $apt. 1. In so doing, many states have sought to reduce labour standards and to diminish the influence of trade unions as the advocates of such standards. One response to this development, both nationally and internationally, has been to emphasise that workers' rights are fundamental human rights. This collection of essays examines whether this is an appropriate or effective strategy. The book begins by considering the translation of human rights discourse into labour standards, namely how theory might be put into practice. The remainder of the book tests hypotheses posited in the first chapter and is divided into three parts. The first part investigates, through a number of national case studies, how, in practice, workers' rights are treated as human rights in the domestic legal context. These ten chapters cover African, American, Asian, European, and Pacific countries. The second part consists of essays which analyse the operation of regional or international systems for human rights promotion, and their particular relevance to the treatment of workers' rights as human rights. The final part consists of chapters which explore regulatory alternatives to the traditional use of human rights law. The book concludes by considering the merits of various regulatory approaches."--Bloomsbury Publishing. 410 0$aOnati international series in law and society. 606 $aEmployee rights 606 $aHuman rights 606 $aLabor laws and legislation 606 $2Employment & labour law 615 0$aEmployee rights. 615 0$aHuman rights. 615 0$aLabor laws and legislation. 676 $a344.0101 702 $aFenwick$b Colin F. 702 $aNovitz$b Tonia 801 0$bUtOrBLW 801 1$bUtOrBLW 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910954911503321 996 $aHuman rights at work$94477103 997 $aUNINA
