Hakim's study reconsiders conventional accounts that locate the origins of Lebanese nationalism in a distant legendary past and then trace its evolution in a linear and gradual manner. She argues that while some of the ideas and historical myths at the core of Lebanese nationalism appeared by the mid-nineteenth century, a coherent popular nationalist ideology and movement emerged only with the establishment of the Lebanese state in 1920. Hakim reconstructs the complex process that led to the appearance of fluid national ideals among members of the clerical and secular Lebanese elite, and follows the fluctuations and variations of these ideals up until the establishment of a Lebanese state. The book is an essential read for anyone interested in the evolution of nationalism in the Middle East and beyond. 606 $aNationalism$zLebanon$xHistory 606 $aElite (Social sciences)$xPolitical activity$zLebanon$xHistory 606 $aPolitical culture$zLebanon$xHistory 606 $aMaronites$zLebanon$xHistory 606 $aDruzes$zLebanon$xHistory 607 $aLebanon$xPolitics and government$y19th century 607 $aLebanon$xPolitics and government$y20th century 607 $aMount Lebanon (Lebanon : Province)$xPolitics and government 607 $aLebanon$xEthnic relations$xHistory 610 $a1920. 610 $aacademic. 610 $abashir ii. 610 $aclerical elite. 610 $afascinating study. 610 $ahistorical myths. 610 $ahistory. 610 $alebanese national idea. 610 $alebanese nationalism. 610 $alebanese state. 610 $alebanese. 610 $alebanon history. 610 $alebanon. 610 $amid 19th century. 610 $amiddle east history. 610 $amiddle east. 610 $amiddle eastern history. 610 $amiddle eastern states. 610 $anational ideals. 610 $anationalism. 610 $anationalist ideology. 610 $anationalist movements. 610 $aoriginal narrative. 610 $apopular nationalist ideology. 610 $asecular lebanese elite. 610 $aworld history. 615 0$aNationalism$xHistory. 615 0$aElite (Social sciences)$xPolitical activity$xHistory. 615 0$aPolitical culture$xHistory. 615 0$aMaronites$xHistory. 615 0$aDruzes$xHistory. 676 $a956.92 676 $a956.92034 700 $aHakim$b Carol$f1954-$01573243 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910779363003321 996 $aThe origins of the Lebanese national idea, 1840-1920$93848889 997 $aUNINA
