Why has it taken such a different route from its Russian prototype? An answer, Elizabeth Perry suggests, lies in the Chinese Communists' creative development and deployment of cultural resources - during their revolutionary rise to power and afterwards. Skillful "cultural positioning" and "cultural patronage," on the part of Mao Zedong, his comrades and successors, helped to construct a polity in which a once alien Communist system came to be accepted as familiarly "Chinese." Perry traces this process through a case study of the Anyuan coal mine, a place where Mao and other early leaders of the Chinese Communist Party mobilized an influential labor movement at the beginning of their revolution, and whose history later became a touchstone of "political correctness" in the People's Republic of China. Once known as "China's Little Moscow," Anyuan came over time to symbolize a distinctively Chinese revolutionary tradition. Yet the meanings of that tradition remain highly contested, as contemporary Chinese debate their revolutionary past in search of a new political future. 410 0$aAsia--local studies/global themes ;$v24. 606 $aCommunism$zChina$zAnyuan (Jiangxi Sheng : West)$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aRevolutions$xSocial aspects$zChina$zAnyuan (Jiangxi Sheng : West)$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aPolitical culture$zChina$zAnyuan (Jiangxi Sheng : West)$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aSocial change$zChina$zAnyuan (Jiangxi Sheng : West)$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aCoal miners$zChina$zAnyuan (Jiangxi Sheng : West)$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aLabor movement$zChina$zAnyuan (Jiangxi Sheng : West)$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aWorking class$zChina$zAnyuan (Jiangxi Sheng : West)$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aAnyuan (Jiangxi Sheng, China : West)$xPolitics and government$y20th century 607 $aAnyuan (Jiangxi Sheng, China : West)$xSocial conditions$y20th century 607 $aAnyuan (Jiangxi Sheng, China : West)$xEconomic conditions$y20th century 610 $a20th century china. 610 $aancient china. 610 $aasian history. 610 $aasian politics. 610 $achinese communism. 610 $achinese communist party. 610 $achinese culture. 610 $achinese history. 610 $achinese isolation. 610 $achinese politics. 610 $acommunist revolution. 610 $aeasy to read. 610 $aengaging. 610 $ahistory of anyuan. 610 $ahistory of communism. 610 $ahome school history books. 610 $ahow does communism work. 610 $alearning from experts. 610 $amao zedong. 610 $anonfiction books. 610 $apage turner. 610 $apolitical science. 610 $apolitics and economy. 610 $aquarantine books. 610 $ared scare. 610 $arussia communism. 610 $asocial politics. 610 $awhat is communism. 615 0$aCommunism$xHistory 615 0$aRevolutions$xSocial aspects$xHistory 615 0$aPolitical culture$xHistory 615 0$aSocial change$xHistory 615 0$aCoal miners$xHistory 615 0$aLabor movement$xHistory 615 0$aWorking class$xHistory 676 $a951.2/22 700 $aPerry$b Elizabeth J$0126366 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910779253803321 996 $aAnyuan$93751783 997 $aUNINA
