In that same decade, approximately one million immigrants settled in Britain. Similar patterns of migration and settlement are taking place in other European countries, such as Germany and France. The Dynamics of Migration and Settlement in Europe explores the causes and consequences of such massive changes in demography. Researchers at the IMISCOE-Network of Excellence (Immigration, Integration and Social Cohesion in Europe) bring together a wealth of theoretical and analytical research in this collection of essays addressing the many crucial questions that have arisen in the past two decades. Underlying these essays is a key concern for the healthy management of these new migration processes, as well as the eventual shape of the new societies that are just beginning to emerge. International migration and the ensuing questions about integration continue to be subjects of intense debate, and this book will be welcomed among those involved in migration studies and international development. 410 0$aIMISCOE joint studies. 606 $aImmigrants$zEurope 607 $aEurope$xEmigration and immigration 607 $aEurope$xRace relations 607 $aEurope$xEthnic relations 615 0$aImmigrants 676 $a304.8/4 702 $aPenninx$b Rinus 702 $aBerger$b Maria 702 $aKraal$b Karen 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996465259803316 996 $aThe dynamics of international migration and settlement in Europe$91975143 997 $aUNISA LEADER 03624nam 2200673 a 450 001 9910779247603321 005 20230125183114.0 010 $a0-7735-8630-X 010 $a1-283-52925-4 010 $a9786613841704 010 $a0-7735-8560-5 024 7 $a10.1515/9780773585607 035 $a(CKB)2550000000104714 035 $a(EBL)3332327 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000700996 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11477247 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000700996 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10672873 035 $a(PQKB)11123059 035 $a(CEL)444012 035 $a(OCoLC)805829829 035 $a(CaBNVSL)slc00230171 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3332327 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10577911 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL384170 035 $a(OCoLC)923236772 035 $a(DE-B1597)657850 035 $a(DE-B1597)9780773585607 035 $a(VaAlCD)20.500.12592/k72fgg 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3332327 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000000104714 100 $a20110607d2011 uy p 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aBlindfold$b[electronic resource] /$fJohn Mikhail Asfour 210 $aMontreal ;$aIthaca $cMcGill-Queen's University Press$dc2011 215 $a1 online resource (106 p.) 225 1 $aThe Hugh MacLennan poetry series 300 $aPoems. 311 $a0-7735-3847-X 327 $a""Cover""; ""Contents""; ""A Different World""; ""Mediterranean Eyes""; ""The Blind Shepherd""; ""Call to Mind""; ""Admitting the Light""; ""Telling Her Stories""; ""The Straw Chair""; ""Uncle""; ""Silver Threads""; ""Wings""; ""December 25th""; ""The Intruder""; ""A Sunday in June""; ""Blindfold""; ""The Cutting Edge""; ""Surgery""; ""Ultimate""; ""Anticipation""; ""A Shot in the Paper""; ""Reflections""; ""Booting the PC""; ""Confined Kisses""; ""Did Not Own Up""; ""Beyond Belief""; ""In the Metro""; ""The Interview""; ""The Curtaina???s Down""; ""Division of Labour""; ""Etched on the Mind"" 327 $a""Falling-Out""""Black Hole""; ""Eggs""; ""Morning Coffee""; ""Oblivious""; ""At Fifty-Five""; ""Passing Desires""; ""Repudiation""; ""Second Hand Love""; ""Short of History""; ""Waiting""; ""Casual Hand Shake""; ""We Only Meet in a Poem Now""; ""Acknowledgments"" 330 $aA sense of exile and belonging dominates the poems, following the journey of a blind man whose life in his new land has been hampered by prejudice and barriers to communication. Exposing the rich and surprising possibilities of a life that has undergone a frightening transformation, Blindfold relates feelings of loss, displacement, and disorientation experienced not only by the disabled but by everyone who finds themselves separated from the norm. Silver Threads He recalls the absence of sound, the impossible silence the disappearance of light. He is only aware of the movement of his mother's hand inside her purse, looking for her handkerchief. He recalls her warning not to play with unknown objects the type that explode on impact. Later, he lies in the dark remembering how she pointed out the silver threads of the morning light just the day before and he sparkles with guilt. 410 0$aHugh MacLennan poetry series. 606 $aBlindness$vPoetry 615 0$aBlindness 676 $aC811/.54 700 $aAsfour$b John$01561462 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 852 0$3Thumbnail cover image:$uhttp://celarc.ca/covers/444/444012.jpg 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910779247603321 996 $aBlindfold$93828204 997 $aUNINA
