By the 1990's, however, its revolutionary political model had collapsed, degenerating into a savage conflict between the military and Islamist guerillas that killed some 200,000 citizens. In this lucid and gripping account, Martin Evans and John Phillips explore Algeria's recent and very bloody history, demonstrating how the high hopes of independence turned into anger as young Algerians grew increasingly alienated. Unemployed, frustrated by the corrupt military regime, and excluded by the West, the post-independence generation needed new heroes, and some found them in Osama bin Laden and the rising Islamist movement. Evans and Phillips trace the complex roots of this alienation, arguing that Algeria's predicament-political instability, pressing economic and social problems, bad governance, a disenfranchised youth-is emblematic of an arc of insecurity stretching from Morocco to Indonesia. Looking back at the pre-colonial and colonial periods, they place Algeria's complex present into historical context, demonstrating how successive governments have manipulated the past for their own ends. The result is a fractured society with a complicated and bitter relationship with the Western powers-and an increasing tendency to export terrorism to France, America, and beyond. 606 $aIslam and politics$zAlgeria 607 $aAlgeria$xHistory$y1962-1990 607 $aAlgeria$xHistory$y1990- 615 0$aIslam and politics 676 $a965.05 700 $aEvans$b Martin$f1964-$01559826 701 $aPhillips$b John$0499780 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910779240703321 996 $aAlgeria$93828140 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04552nam 2200625 450 001 9910830888203321 005 20230617041600.0 010 $a1-281-84302-4 010 $a9786611843021 010 $a3-527-61715-9 010 $a3-527-61716-7 035 $a(CKB)1000000000377468 035 $a(EBL)481751 035 $a(OCoLC)289076987 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000188649 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11173433 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000188649 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10165416 035 $a(PQKB)10176304 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC481751 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000377468 100 $a20160818h20042004 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aLandau fermi-liquid theory $econcept and applications /$fGordon Baym and Christopher Petchick 210 1$aWeinheim, [Germany] :$cWiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
