The circulation of manuscripts and books between different continents played a key role in the process of the first globalization from the 16th century onwards. While the European colonial organization mobilised several forms of writing and tried to control the circulation and reception of this material, the very function and meaning of written culture was recreated by the introduction and appropriation of written culture into societies without alphabetical forms of writing. This book explores the extent to which the control over the materiality of writing has shaped the numerous and complex processes of cultural exchange during the early modern period. 410 0$aAfrican history (Brill Academic Publishers) ;$vv. 2. 606 $aWritten communication$zAfrica$xHistory$vCongresses 606 $aWritten communication$zAmerica$xHistory$vCongresses 606 $aCommunication and culture$zAfrica$xHistory$vCongresses 606 $aCommunication and culture$zAmerica$xHistory$vCongresses 606 $aCultural relations$xHistory$vCongresses 607 $aAfrica$xColonization$xHistory$vCongresses 607 $aAmerica$xColonization$xHistory$vCongresses 615 0$aWritten communication$xHistory 615 0$aWritten communication$xHistory 615 0$aCommunication and culture$xHistory 615 0$aCommunication and culture$xHistory 615 0$aCultural relations$xHistory 676 $a302.2/24409 701 $aDelmas$b Adrien$0968562 701 $aPenn$b Nigel$0968563 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910779089603321 996 $aWritten culture in a colonial context$92199982 997 $aUNINA
