The lure of the Japanese model, however, has faded since the 1990's. Growth is in short supply and equality a thing of the past. In Welfare through Work, Mari Miura looks in depth at Japan's social protection system as a factor in the contemporary malaise of the Japanese political economy. The Japanese social protection system should be understood as a system of "welfare through work," Miura suggests, because employment protection has functionally substituted for income maintenance. A gendered dual system in the labor market allowed a high degree of labor market flexibility, which enabled Japan to achieve high employment rates as well as strong legal protections for regular workers. In recent years, conservatives gradually replaced the productivism and cooperatism that had resulted from earlier party politics with neoliberalism, which, in turn, hampered the effectiveness of the welfare through work system. In Miura's view, the dynamics of partisan competition fostered ideational renewal, just as the political visions and ideologies of the governing party strongly affected the design of the social protection system. In the scenario Miura describes, the partisan dynamics since the 1990's resulted in the policy change that further undermined the social protection system, and the ensuing disruption has been felt throughout Japan. 606 $aJob security$xPolitical aspects$zJapan 606 $aPublic welfare$zJapan 606 $aEconomic assistance, Domestic$zJapan 606 $aLabor policy$zJapan 606 $aConservatism$zJapan 607 $aJapan$xSocial policy 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aJob security$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aPublic welfare 615 0$aEconomic assistance, Domestic 615 0$aLabor policy 615 0$aConservatism 676 $a331.25/96 686 $aMH 48920$2rvk 700 $aMiura$b Mari$01048690 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910462523803321 996 $aWelfare through work$92477141 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03478nam 2200613Ia 450 001 9910778925503321 005 20230829010839.0 010 $a1-280-48826-3 010 $a9786613583499 010 $a1-907969-66-7 035 $a(CKB)2550000000096509 035 $a(EBL)912551 035 $a(OCoLC)793511097 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000914576 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11538540 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000914576 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10863520 035 $a(PQKB)11369407 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1786530 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1786530 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10594297 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL358349 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000000096509 100 $a20111102d2006 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aInvolving young people in teenage pregnancy and sexual work$b[electronic resource] $ea practical guide /$fEllie Lewis 210 $aLondon $cNational Children's Bureau Enterprises$d2006 215 $a1 online resource (84 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a1-904787-81-9 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references. 327 $aCover; Acknowledgements; Foreword by Children's Commissioner for England; Foreword by young peer mentor; Contents; 1.
