Theodore Jun Yoo shows that as women moved out of traditional spheres to occupy new positions outside the home, they encountered the pervasive control of the colonial state, which sought to impose modernity on them. While some Korean women conformed to the dictates of colonial hegemony, others took deliberate pains to distinguish between what was "modern" (e.g., Western outfits) and thus legitimate, and what was "Japanese," and thus illegitimate. Yoo argues that what made the experience of these women unique was the dual confrontation with modernity itself and with Japan as a colonial power. 410 0$aAsia Pacific modern ;$v3. 606 $aWomen$zKorea$xSocial conditions$y20th century 606 $aSex role$zKorea$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aKorea$xHistory$yJapanese occupation, 1910-1945 610 $acolonial hegemony. 610 $acolonial power. 610 $acomfort women. 610 $afamily. 610 $afeminists in asia. 610 $agender women studies. 610 $agenerational. 610 $ajapan korean relations. 610 $ajapanese colonialism. 610 $akorean feminist. 610 $akorean history. 610 $akorean women. 610 $alife changes. 610 $alife lessons. 610 $amodernity. 610 $apervasive control. 610 $apolitical roles. 610 $apublic discourse. 610 $aradical transformation. 615 0$aWomen$xSocial conditions 615 0$aSex role$xHistory 676 $a305.48/895700904 700 $aYoo$b Theodore Jun$f1972-$01547679 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910778469103321 996 $aThe politics of gender in colonial Korea$93804175 997 $aUNINA
