Mary Waters, however, tells a very different story. She finds that the values that gain first-generation immigrants initial success--a willingness to work hard, a lack of attention to racism, a desire for education, an incentive to save--are undermined by the realities of life and race relations in the United States. Contrary to long-held beliefs, Waters finds, those who resist Americanization are most likely to succeed economically, especially in the second generation. 606 $aCaribbean American$xEthnic identity 606 $aCaribbean American$xRace identity 606 $aCaribbean Americans$xCultural assimilation 606 $aImmigrants$zUnited States$xSocial conditions 607 $aUnited States$xEthnic relations 607 $aUnited States$xRace relations 615 0$aCaribbean American$xEthnic identity. 615 0$aCaribbean American$xRace identity. 615 0$aCaribbean Americans$xCultural assimilation. 615 0$aImmigrants$xSocial conditions. 676 $a305.896/9729073 700 $aWaters$b Mary C$0676343 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910778443003321 996 $aBlack identities$93745163 997 $aUNINA
