In his innovative analysis, Jon Holtzman uses food as a way to contextualize and measure the profound changes occurring in Samburu social and material life. He shows that if Samburu reaction to the new foods is primarily negative-they are referred to disparagingly as "gray food" and "government food"-it is also deeply ambivalent. For example, the Samburu attribute a host of social maladies to these dietary changes, including selfishness and moral decay. Yet because the new foods save lives during famines, the same individuals also talk of the triumph of reason over an antiquated culture and speak enthusiastically of a better life where there is less struggle to find food. Through detailed analysis of a range of food-centered arenas, Uncertain Tastes argues that the experience of food itself-symbolic, sensuous, social, and material-is intrinsically characterized by multiple and frequently conflicting layers. 410 0$aACLS Fellows' Publications. 517 3 $aMemory, ambivalence, and the politics of eating in Samburu, northern Kenya 606 $aSamburu (African people)$xFood 606 $aSamburu (African people)$xDomestic animals 606 $aSamburu (African people)$xSocial conditions 606 $aFood habits$zKenya$zSamburu District 606 $aFood preferences$zKenya$zSamburu District 606 $aFood$xSymbolic aspects$zKenya$zSamburu District 606 $aCulture conflict$zKenya$zSamburu District 606 $aSocial change$zKenya$zSamburu District 607 $aSamburu District (Kenya)$xSocial conditions 607 $aSamburu District (Kenya)$xEconomic conditions 610 $aafrican culture. 610 $aagricultural products. 610 $aagriculture. 610 $aanthropology. 610 $abasic diet. 610 $ablood. 610 $acattle. 610 $acultural studies. 610 $aeating. 610 $aethnography. 610 $afamines. 610 $afood. 610 $agastronomy. 610 $agovernment food. 610 $agray food. 610 $akenya. 610 $akenyan culture. 610 $aloikop. 610 $alokop. 610 $ameat. 610 $amilk. 610 $amoral decay. 610 $anilotic people. 610 $anorth central kenya. 610 $anorthern kenya. 610 $apastoralists. 610 $asamburu cattle herders. 610 $asamburu culture. 610 $asamburu material life. 610 $asamburu social life. 610 $asamburu tribe. 610 $asamburu. 610 $aselfishness. 610 $asemi nomadic. 610 $astruggle for food. 615 0$aSamburu (African people)$xFood. 615 0$aSamburu (African people)$xDomestic animals. 615 0$aSamburu (African people)$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aFood habits 615 0$aFood preferences 615 0$aFood$xSymbolic aspects 615 0$aCulture conflict 615 0$aSocial change 676 $a641.30089/965 700 $aHoltzman$b Jon$01474518 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910778403403321 996 $aUncertain tastes$93688278 997 $aUNINA
