The contributors take the languages of Africa, the Caribbean, and the US as cases in point to illustrate the effects of exceptionalist beliefs that these languages are inadequate for instructional purposes. They describe contravening movements toward various forms of linguistic diversity both inside and outside of school settings across these regions. Different theoretical lenses and a range of empirical data are brought to bear on investigating the role of these languages in educational policies and practices. Collectively, the chapters in this volume make the case for a comprehensive language awareness to remedy the myths of linguistic exceptionalism and to advance the affirmative dimensions of linguistic diversity. 410 0$aNew perspectives on language and education. 606 $aLanguage and education 606 $aLanguage policy 606 $aBlack people$xLanguages 606 $aLinguistic minorities 606 $aLanguage awareness 610 $aAfrica. 610 $aAfrican minority languages. 610 $adiaspora. 610 $alanguage and education. 610 $alanguage awareness. 610 $alinguistic diversity. 610 $alinguistic exceptionalism. 615 0$aLanguage and education. 615 0$aLanguage policy. 615 0$aBlack people$xLanguages. 615 0$aLinguistic minorities. 615 0$aLanguage awareness. 676 $a408.9/96 701 $aKleifgen$b Jo Anne$01502728 701 $aBond$b George C$01502729 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910778075503321 996 $aThe languages of Africa and the diaspora$93730656 997 $aUNINA
