It completes the story begun there of Samuel Clemens's business affairs, especially insofar as they concern dealings with publishers; and it documents Clemens's progress from financial disaster, with the Paige typesetter and Webster & Company, to renewed prosperity under the steady, skillful hand of H. H. Rogers. But Clemens's correspondence with Rogers reveals more than a business relationship. It illuminates a friendship which Clemens came to value above all others, and it suggests a profound change in his patterns of living. He who during the Hartford years had been a devoted family man, content with a discrete circle of intimates, now became again (as he had been during the Nevada and California years) a man among sporting men, enjoying prizefights and professional billiard matches in public, and-in private-long days of poker, gruff jest, and good Scotch whisky aboard Rogers's magnificent yacht. 410 0$aMark Twain Papers 606 $aLITERARY CRITICISM / American / General$2bisacsh 610 $aamerican authors. 610 $aamerican literature. 610 $aauthor. 610 $aautobiography. 610 $abankruptcy. 610 $abilliards. 610 $abiography. 610 $abusiness man. 610 $abusiness. 610 $acareer. 610 $aclassics. 610 $acorrespondence. 610 $aepistolary. 610 $afamous author. 610 $afinancial disaster. 610 $afriendship. 610 $agender. 610 $ahh rogers. 610 $ahumor. 610 $aletters. 610 $aliterary celebrity. 610 $aliterary criticism. 610 $aliterary figures. 610 $amale friendship. 610 $amark twain. 610 $amasculinity. 610 $amemoir. 610 $apen pals. 610 $apoker. 610 $aprizefights. 610 $apublisher. 610 $apublishing. 610 $asamuel clemens. 610 $asatire. 610 $aspeaking tour. 610 $asports. 610 $awealth. 610 $ayacht. 615 7$aLITERARY CRITICISM / American / General. 676 $a817/.4 686 $aHT 4702$2rvk 700 $aTwain$b Mark$f1835-1910.$027404 701 $aRogers$b Henry Huttleston$f1840-1909.$01522814 701 $aLeary$b Lewis$f1906-1990.$0119188 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910778067303321 996 $aMark Twain's correspondence with Henry Huttleston Rogers, 1893-1909$93762712 997 $aUNINA
