This is done through an analysis of changes in the hierarchical structures that regulate the internal organization of both the EP as a whole and the individual party groups. In addition, the changing pattern of coalition formation between party groups across time and legislative procedure is analyzed. The trends of internal development examined suggest that the increases in EP power that have occurred since the creation of the cooperation procedure by the Single European Act in 1987 have caused a fundamental shift in the character of the European Parliament as a legislative institution. Prior to 1987 the European Parliament, despite direct election and several small attempts to increase its powers, served primarily as a chamber of debate where much more was discussed than accomplished. 410 0$aCambridge studies in comparative politics. 517 3 $aThe European Parliament & Supranational Party System 606 $aPolitical parties$zEuropean Union countries 606 $aCoalitions 615 0$aPolitical parties 615 0$aCoalitions. 676 $a341.24/24 700 $aKreppel$b Amie$f1968-$0853431 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910450208603321 996 $aThe European Parliament and Supranational Party System$91905610 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02243nam 2200529Ia 450 001 9910777587103321 005 20230616235233.0 010 $a0-8018-8151-X 035 $a(CKB)1000000000451205 035 $a(OCoLC)70729250 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebrary10070241 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000162174 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11159384 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000162174 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10200968 035 $a(PQKB)10000424 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3318218 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10070241 035 $a(OCoLC)923191929 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3318218 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000451205 100 $a20030801d2003 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 04$aThe George W.
