It provides a systematic and theoretically rigorous examination of whether these trials are used as tools for political consolidation or whether justice is their primary purpose. The consideration of cases begins with the trial of Charles I of England and goes through the presidency of George W. Bush, including the trials of Saddam Hussein and those arising from the War on Terror. The book concludes that political consolidation is the primary concern of these trials - a point that runs contrary to the popular perception of the trials and their stated justification. Through the consideration of war crimes trials, this book makes a contribution to our understanding of power and conflict resolution and illuminates the developmental path of war crimes tribunals. 517 3 $aThe Rise & Fall of War Crimes Trials 606 $aWar crime trials$xHistory 606 $aInternational criminal courts 615 0$aWar crime trials$xHistory. 615 0$aInternational criminal courts. 676 $a341.6/9 700 $aSmith$b Charles Anthony$f1961-$01027905 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910452252003321 996 $aThe rise and fall of war crimes trials$92443648 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04116oam 2200685Ma 450 001 9910777417403321 005 20190503073343.0 010 $a0-262-25056-X 010 $a1-282-09837-3 010 $a9786612098376 010 $a0-262-28379-4 010 $a1-4237-9659-4 035 $a(CKB)1000000000451983 035 $a(EBL)3338653 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000226888 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11221869 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000226888 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10259529 035 $a(PQKB)10226976 035 $a(OCoLC)228171763$z(OCoLC)71000557$z(OCoLC)228171764$z(OCoLC)481917045$z(OCoLC)568000770$z(OCoLC)648226936$z(OCoLC)733988161$z(OCoLC)756542506$z(OCoLC)874241698$z(OCoLC)874315164$z(OCoLC)888613287$z(OCoLC)961575383$z(OCoLC)962612308$z(OCoLC)988435778$z(OCoLC)991915416$z(OCoLC)1037420288$z(OCoLC)1037921589$z(OCoLC)1038635291$z(OCoLC)1055391911$z(OCoLC)1081230123$z(OCoLC)1083554499 035 $a(OCoLC-P)228171763 035 $a(MaCbMITP)5530 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3338653 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10173715 035 $a(OCoLC)228171763 035 $a(PPN)170232069 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3338653 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000451983 100 $a20040213d2004 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 04$aThe price of smoking /$fFrank A. This longitudinal study on the private and social costs of smoking calculates that the cost of smoking to a 24-year-old woman smoker is $86,000 over a lifetime; for a 24-year-old male smoker the cost is $183,000. The total social cost of smoking over a lifetimeincluding both private costs to the smoker and costs imposed on others (including second-hand smoke and costs of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security)comes to $106,000 for a woman and $220,00 for a man. The cost per pack over a lifetime of smoking: almost $40.00. The first study to quantify the cost of smoking in this way, or in such depth, this accessible book not only adds a weapon to the arsenal of antismoking messages but also provides a framework for assessment that can be applied to other health behaviors. The findings on the effects of smoking on Medicare and Medicaid will be surprising and perhaps controversial, for the authors estimate the costs to be much lower than the damage awards being paid to 46 states as a result of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement. 606 $aSmoking$zUnited States$xCosts$vLongitudinal studies 606 $aSmoking$xHealth aspects$zUnited States 606 $aSmoking$xEconomic aspects$zUnited States 610 $aBIOMEDICAL SCIENCES/General 610 $aECONOMICS/Political Economy 610 $aECONOMICS/Public Economics 615 0$aSmoking$xCosts 615 0$aSmoking$xHealth aspects 615 0$aSmoking$xEconomic aspects 676 $a362.29/6 701 $aSloan$b Frank A$0116362 801 0$bOCoLC-P 801 1$bOCoLC-P 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910777417403321 996 $aThe price of smoking$93675192 997 $aUNINA
