Focusing on the Oklahoma Cherokee, she examines how Cherokee identity is socially and politically constructed, and how that process is embedded in ideas of blood, color, and race. Not quite a century ago, blood degree varied among Cherokee citizens from full blood to 1/256, but today the range is far greater--from full blood to 1/2048. This trend raises questions about the symbolic significance of blood and the degree to which blood connections can stretch and still carry a sense of legitimacy. It also raises questions about how much racial blending can occur before Cherokees cease to be identified as a distinct people and what danger is posed to Cherokee sovereignty if the federal government continues to identify Cherokees and other Native Americans on a racial basis. Combining contemporary ethnography and ethnohistory, Sturm's sophisticated and insightful analysis probes the intersection of race and national identity, the process of nation formation, and the dangers in linking racial and national identities. 517 3 $aRace, culture, and identity in the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma 606 $aCherokee Indians$xEthnic identity 606 $aCherokee Indians$xMixed descent 606 $aCherokee Indians$xSocial conditions 606 $aEthnohistory$zOklahoma 610 $aamerica. 610 $aamerican indians. 610 $aanthropology. 610 $ablood degree. 610 $ablood ties. 610 $acherokee culture. 610 $acherokee indians. 610 $acherokee nation. 610 $acherokee studies. 610 $acultural identity. 610 $aethnography. 610 $aethnohistory. 610 $afederal government. 610 $aindigenous peoples. 610 $amodern history. 610 $anational identity. 610 $anative american culture. 610 $anative americans. 610 $anonfiction. 610 $aoklahoma cherokee. 610 $aoklahoma. 610 $apolitical identity. 610 $apolitical issues. 610 $arace relations. 610 $aracial blending. 610 $aracial identification. 610 $aracial identity. 610 $aracial issues. 610 $aracism. 610 $asocial identity. 610 $aunited states. 615 0$aCherokee Indians$xEthnic identity. 615 0$aCherokee Indians$xMixed descent. 615 0$aCherokee Indians$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aEthnohistory 676 $a305.897/55 700 $aSturm$b Circe$f1967-$0792403 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910777387903321 996 $aBlood politics$91771850 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02204nam0 22004813i 450 001 VAN00226347 005 20240806101313.210 017 70$2N$a9783030504649 100 $a20211014d2020 |0itac50 ba 101 $aeng 102 $aCH 105 $a|||| ||||| 200 1 $aDevelopments and Novel Approaches in Biomechanics and Metamaterials$fBilen Emek Abali, Ivan Giorgio editors 210 $aCham$cSpringer$d2020 215 $axxviii, 484 p.$cill.$d24 cm 410 1$1001VAN00107736$12001 $aAdvanced Structured Materials$1210 $aHeidelberg$cSpringer$d2010-$v132 500 1$3VAN00226349$aDevelopments and Novel Approaches in Biomechanics and Metamaterials$91879417 606 $a00A79 (77-XX)$xPhysics [MSC 2020]$3VANC023182$2MF 606 $a00B25$xProceedings of conferences of miscellaneous specific interest [MSC 2020]$3VANC020732$2MF 606 $a70-XX$xMechanics of particles and systems [MSC 2020]$3VANC021390$2MF 606 $a92C10$xBiomechanics [MSC 2020]$3VANC030904$2MF 610 $aComplexity$9KW:K 610 $aContinuum Mechanics$9KW:K 610 $aElasticity$9KW:K 610 $aHomogenization$9KW:K 610 $aIcONSOM$9KW:K 610 $aMetamaterials$9KW:K 610 $aModeling solid body mechanics$9KW:K 620 $aCH$dCham$3VANL001889 702 1$aAbali$bBilen E.$3VANV098280 702 1$aGiorgio$bIvan$3VANV190133 712 $aSpringer $3VANV108073$4650 790 1$aAbali, Bilen Emek$zAbali, Bilen E.$3VANV100379 790 1$aAbali, B.
