The controversy eventually produced a Holy Roman Empire of two churches. This is not an economic history. Rather, the book shows how acceptance of confiscation was won, and how theological advice was essential to the success of what is sometimes called a crucial if early stage of confessional state-building. It reviews the character of sacred property in the late Middle Ages, surveys confiscations in Reformation Germany on illustrative examples, summarizes the League of Schmalkalden's defense of confiscations, systematically studies theological memoranda that shaped a common policy in the League, and shows the role of that common position in religious politics. 410 0$aStudies in Medieval and Reformation Traditions ;$v114. 517 3 $aConfiscation and Religious Purpose in the Holy Roman Empire 606 $aChurch property 606 $aReformation 607 $aHoly Roman Empire$xChurch history$y16th century 615 0$aChurch property. 615 0$aReformation. 676 $a274.3/06 700 $aOcker$b Christopher$01548638 801 0$bNL-LeKB 801 1$bNL-LeKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910777012503321 996 $aChurch Robbers and Reformers in Germany, 1525-1547$93821810 997 $aUNINA
