Why do some unions (and their allied parties and civic associations) succeed in building more universal and comprehensive social policy regimes, while others fail to do so? In this innovative work, Cheol-Sung Lee explores these conundrums through a comparative historical analysis of four countries: Argentina, Brazil, South Korea and Taiwan. He introduces the notion of 'embedded cohesiveness' in order to develop an explanatory model in which labor-civic solidarity and union-political party alliance jointly account for outcomes of welfare state retrenchment as well as welfare state expansion. Lee's exploration of the critical roles of civil society and social movement processes in shaping democratic governance and public policies make this ideal for academic researchers and graduate students in comparative politics, political sociology and network analysis. 410 0$aStructural analysis in the social sciences ;$v41. 606 $aLabor movement$zDeveloping countries 606 $aLabor unions$xPolitical activity$zDeveloping countries 606 $aSocial movements$zDeveloping countries 606 $aSolidarity$zDeveloping countries 606 $aWelfare state$zDeveloping countries 607 $aDeveloping countries$xSocial policy 615 0$aLabor movement 615 0$aLabor unions$xPolitical activity 615 0$aSocial movements 615 0$aSolidarity 615 0$aWelfare state 676 $a330.12/6 700 $aLee$b Cheol-Sung$01074799 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910136594303321 996 $aWhen solidarity works$92581884 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03339nam 2200409 450 001 9910774831303321 005 20230324233005.0 035 $a(CKB)4100000011741036 035 $a(NjHacI)994100000011741036 035 $a(EXLCZ)994100000011741036 100 $a20230324d2020 uy 0 101 0 $aita 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aLettere scientifiche e non solo tra un premio Nobel e un giovane scienziato $ecarteggio tra Giulio Natta e Enzo Ferroni dal 1958 al 1968 /$fLaura Colli 210 1$aFirenze :$cFirenze University Press,$d2020. 215 $a1 online resource (148 pages) $cillustrations 225 1 $aFonti storiche e letterarie 311 $a88-5518-101-7 327 $aPREFAZIONE 7 -- Luigi Dei -- RINGRAZIAMENTI 9 -- INTRODUZIONE 11 -- 1. Almost sixty years later, this research has made it possible to recover the memory of Ferroni as an avant-garde scientist also in the field of macromolecules and the possibility offered to him by Natta of a prestigious role as a researcher at his institute in Milan. The archives, even the scientific ones, can reserve surprises of this kind: they are prolific in technical data but also reveal traces of humanity. The volume also includes the joint publication of the two chemists and seven articles by Ferroni presented by Natta at the Accademia dei Lincei. 410 0$aFonti storiche e letterarie.
