Walker begins and ends his impassioned book on the scorched Kalahari Desert, where he and a colleague tagged along with a bushman in search of food." Toronto Star "Walker's The Grand Food Bargain provides an antidote: a thoughtful analysis of how the food system got into this mess...Walker reveals a disturbing political, social and economic landscape...The drive for more, he shows, demands profligate use of finite resources, from energy to land...His diagnosis has been articulated before...But Walker's experience in agribusiness adds authority...Walker left with the bubbling anxiety that our focus on technological and scientific fixes blinkers us to the environmental cost of our greed. Ignore the irrevocable laws of nature for long enough and we put our own, rather narrow, ecological niche at risk." Nature "Former farmer, agriculture and agribusiness expert, and professor Walker reveals the truth about this presumed never-ending food abundance...Ultimately, Walker emphasizes the fact that people do have the power to shift the scales back to quality food choices, which will positively affect farming, economic development, and the environment around the world. An enlightened view of global food policies and the changes necessary for a viable future." Booklist "Compelling and revelatory. Kevin Walker combines decades of on-the-ground experience as an agribusiness expert with the sweeping analysis of a historian. What emerges is an urgent and entirely new understanding of our modern food supply.? Christopher Leonard, author of "The Meat Racket: The Secret Takeover of America's Food Business" ?A former USDA insider?s account of what our Grand Food Bargain?a system focused on ever-increasing production of cheap food?actually costs Americans in poor health, environmental degradation, and loss of agrarian values and community. Walker?s views are well worth reading for his insights into how our food system needs to be transformed.? Marion Nestle, Professor Emerita at New York University and author of "Unsavory Truth: How Food Companies Skew the Science of What We Eat" ?The Grand Food Bargain by Kevin Walker pokes a hole in our Red Barn Syndrome, America?s romantic notion of farming. Walker calls out Big Ag and its self-assigned duty to ?feed the world,? which justifies practices that aren?t environmentally or scientifically sound. The Grand Food Bargain is a call to rethink everything we think we know about what we eat.? Peggy Lowe, Investigations Editor at Harvest Public Media and NPR-affiliate KCUR ?This book is downright brilliant. Walker?s deep insights and analysis steer the reader to positive and unforetold conclusions. He shows us that food markets are not inexorable, that consumers have choices, and that societal deals we eaters have settled for in the past need not be the nutrition milieu we bargain for in the future.? According to the Wandering Jew legend, as Jesus made his way to Calvary, a man refused him rest, cruelly taunting him to hurry to meet his fate. In response, Jesus cursed the man to wander until the Second Coming. Since the medieval period, the legend has inspired hundreds of adaptations by artists and writers. Instrument of Memory: Encounters with the Wandering Jew, the first English-language study of the legend in over fifty years, is also the first to examine the influence of the legend's medieval and early modern sources over the centuries into the present day. Using the lens of memory studies, the work shows how the Christian tradition of the legend centered the memory of the Passion at the heart of the Wandering Jew's curse. Instrument of Memory also shows how Jewish artists and writers have reimagined the legend through Jewish memory traditions. Through this focus on memory, Jewish adaptors of the legend create complex renderings of the Wandering Jew that recognize not only the entanglement of Jewish and Christian memory, but also the impact of that entanglement on Jewish subjects. This book presents a complex, sympathetic, and more fully realized version of the legend while challenging the limits of the presentism of memory studies. 606 $aWandering Jew in literature 606 $aWandering Jew in art 606 $aWandering Jew$xInfluence 606 $aMemory in literature 615 0$aWandering Jew in literature. 615 0$aWandering Jew in art. 615 0$aWandering Jew$xInfluence. 615 0$aMemory in literature. 676 $a809/.93353 686 $aHIS000000$aHIS037010$aLIT011000$2bisacsh 700 $aLampert-Weissig$b Lisa$0592869 712 02$aMichigan Publishing (University of Michigan), 801 0$bEYM 801 1$bEYM 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910774812303321 996 $aInstrument of Memory$93771397 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01750nas 2200505- 450 001 9910229819403321 005 20200728072633.8 011 $a2360-0519 035 $a(OCoLC)908351636 035 $a(CKB)3780000000078862 035 $a(CONSER)--2015267108 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2819842-6 035 $a(EXLCZ)993780000000078862 100 $a20150504a20149999 --- - 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aEuropean journal of public order and national security 210 1$aBucharest, Romania :$cEstfalia Publishing House,$d2014- 215 $a1 online resource (volumes) 311 08$a2360-2519 517 1 $aEuropean journal PONS 517 1 $aEJPONS 606 $aPublic policy (Law)$zEurope$vPeriodicals 606 $aInternal security$zEurope$vPeriodicals 606 $aNational security$xLaw and legislation$zEurope$vPeriodicals 606 $aInternal security$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00976624 606 $aNational security$xLaw and legislation$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01033727 606 $aPublic policy (Law)$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01082822 607 $aEurope$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 615 0$aPublic policy (Law) 615 0$aInternal security 615 0$aNational security$xLaw and legislation 615 7$aInternal security. 615 7$aNational security$xLaw and legislation. 615 7$aPublic policy (Law) 712 02$aEuropean Association of Scientific Research, 712 02$aAcademia de Polit?ie "Alexandru Ioan Cuza", 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910229819403321 996 $aEuropean journal of public order and national security$91947184 997 $aUNINA
