Against the background of the debates on the American Revolution of 1776 and the French Revolution of 1789, to which he made significant contributions, Bentham worked first on producing a complete penal code, which involved him in detailed explorations of fundamental legal ideas, and then on his panopticon prison scheme. Despite developing a host of original and ground-breaking ideas, contained in a mass of manuscripts, he published little during these years, and remained, at the close of this period, a relatively obscure individual. Nevertheless, these volumes reveal how the foundations were laid for the remarkable rise of Benthamite utilitarianism in the early nineteenth century. 606 $aDiaries, letters & journals$2bicssc 606 $aPhilosophy$2bicssc 606 $aWestern philosophy: c 1600 to c 1900$2bicssc 606 $aEthics & moral philosophy$2bicssc 610 $aphilosophy 610 $ajeremy bentham 610 $autilitarianism 610 $alegal thought 610 $aAutograph 610 $aDocket (court) 610 $aLondon 610 $aOvertime (sports) 610 $aPostmark 610 $aSamuel Bentham 610 $aTothill Fields 615 7$aDiaries, letters & journals 615 7$aPhilosophy 615 7$aWestern philosophy: c 1600 to c 1900 615 7$aEthics & moral philosophy 676 $a320.5130941 700 $aTaylor Milne$b Alexander$4edt$01461059 702 $aTaylor Milne$b Alexander$4oth 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910773214003321 996 $aThe Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham, Volume 5$93662924 997 $aUNINA
