Within the developing Aegean empire of the Ptolemies, the role of the navy is examined together with that of its admirals. Egypt's close relationship to Rhodes is subjected to scrutiny, as is the constant threat of piracy to the transport of goods on the Nile and by sea. Along with the trade in grain came the exchange of other products. Ptolemaic kings used their wealth for luxury ships and the dissemination of royal portraiture was accompanied by royal cult. Alexandria, the new capital of Egypt, attracted poets, scholars and even philosophers; geographical exploration by sea was a feature of the period and observations of the time enjoyed a long afterlife. 517 3 $aThe Ptolemies, the Sea & the Nile 606 $aSea-power$zEgypt$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aPiracy$zEgypt$xHistory$yTo 1500 607 $aEgypt$xHistory, Naval 607 $aMediterranean Sea$xHistory 607 $aRed Sea$xHistory 607 $aNile River$xHistory 607 $aEgypt$xRelations$zGreece$zRhodes 607 $aRhodes (Greece)$xRelations$zEgypt 615 0$aSea-power$xHistory 615 0$aPiracy$xHistory 676 $a932/.021 702 $aBuraselis$b Kostas 702 $aStefanou$b Mary 702 $aThompson$b Dorothy J.$f1939- 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910452493903321 996 $aThe Ptolemies, the sea and the Nile$92451087 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04893nam 22006855 450 001 9910768195903321 005 20251008152030.0 010 $a9783031410963 010 $a3031410963 024 7 $a10.1007/978-3-031-41096-3 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC30997887 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL30997887 035 $a(CKB)29267759100041 035 $a(DE-He213)978-3-031-41096-3 035 $a(OCoLC)1415892960 035 $a(EXLCZ)9929267759100041 100 $a20231204d2023 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aPolice Conflict Management, Volume I $eChallenges and Opportunities in the 21st Century /$fedited by Mario S.
