This was an early case of theory from the South: concepts developed from an explicitly peripheral epistemological vantage point and launched as a corrective to European and North American theoretical formulations. What Ortiz proposed was a contrapuntal vision of complexly entangled processes that we, today, would conceptualize as cultural emergence. Inspired by Ortiz, this volume engineers an unprecedented conversation between Mediterraneanists and Caribbeanists. It harnesses Ortiz's mid-twentieth-century theoretical formulations to early twenty-first-century issues pertinent to both regions, including migration, territorial sovereignty, and cultural diversity. The contributors explore this perspective (arguably formed during Ortiz's youth in late nineteenth-century Menorca) in a dialogue between scholars of the contemporary Caribbean and Mediterranean to enable novel analytics for both regions and to more broadly to probe the promises and limits of Ortiz's contribution for contemporary anthropological research and theorizing --$cSource other than Library of Congress. 410 0$aClassics in Ethnographic Theory Series 606 $aAnthropology$zCaribbean Area 606 $aAnthropology$zMediterranean Region 606 $aCultural fusion 606 $aAnthropologie$zCarai?bes (Re?gion) 606 $aDouble appartenance (Sciences sociales) 606 $aAnthropology$2fast 606 $aCivilization$2fast 607 $aCaribbean Area$xCivilization 607 $aMediterranean Region$xCivilization 607 $aMe?diterrane?e, Re?gion de la$xCivilisation 607 $aCaribbean Area$2fast 607 $aMediterranean Region$2fast 615 0$aAnthropology 615 0$aAnthropology 615 0$aCultural fusion. 615 6$aAnthropologie 615 6$aDouble appartenance (Sciences sociales) 615 7$aAnthropology. 615 7$aCivilization. 676 $a972.9 700 $aPalmié$b Stephan$0976615 702 $aPalmie?$b Stephan 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910767597603321 996 $aFernando Ortiz$94207065 997 $aUNINA
