Handley examines literary interpretations of the Western American past. Handley argues that although scholarship provides a narrative of western history that counters optimistic story of frontier individualism by focusing on the victims of conquest, twentieth-century American fiction tells a different story of intra-ethnic violence surrounding marriages and families. He examines works of historiography,as well as writing by Zane Grey, Willa Cather, Wallace Stegner and Joan Didion among others, to argue that these works highlight white Americans' anxiety about what happens to American 'character' when domestic enemies such as Indians and Mormon polygamists, against whom the nation had defined itself in the nineteenth century, no longer threaten its homes. Handley explains that once its enemies are gone, imperialism brings violence home in retrospective narratives that allegorise national pasts and futures through intimate relationships. 410 0$aCambridge studies in American literature and culture ;$v132. 517 3 $aMarriage, Violence & the Nation in the American Literary West 606 $aAmerican literature$zWest (U.S.)$xHistory and criticism 606 $aNovelists, American$xHomes and haunts$zWest (U.S.) 606 $aDomestic fiction, American$xHistory and criticism 606 $aNational characteristics, American, in literature 606 $aWestern stories$xHistory and criticism 606 $aFrontier and pioneer life in literature 606 $aFamily violence in literature 606 $aWomen pioneers in literature 606 $aMarriage in literature 606 $aViolence in literature 607 $aWest (U.S.)$xIntellectual life 607 $aWest (U.S.)$xIn literature 615 0$aAmerican literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aNovelists, American$xHomes and haunts 615 0$aDomestic fiction, American$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aNational characteristics, American, in literature. 615 0$aWestern stories$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aFrontier and pioneer life in literature. 615 0$aFamily violence in literature. 615 0$aWomen pioneers in literature. 615 0$aMarriage in literature. 615 0$aViolence in literature. 676 $a810.9/3278 700 $aHandley$b William R.$014034 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910450536903321 996 $aMarriage, violence, and the nation in the American literary West$92471244 997 $aUNINA LEADER 05306nam 22008415 450 001 9910767537203321 005 20251226200310.0 010 $a3-540-77690-7 024 7 $a10.1007/978-3-540-77690-1 035 $a(CKB)1000000000491097 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000320715 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11254866 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000320715 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10258145 035 $a(PQKB)11221671 035 $a(DE-He213)978-3-540-77690-1 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3062168 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC337172 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC6426082 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL337172 035 $a(OCoLC)233973850 035 $a(PPN)123743443 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000491097 100 $a20100301d2008 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurnn|008mamaa 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aWireless Sensor Networks $e5th European Conference, EWSN 2008, Bologna, Italy, January 30-February 1, 2008, Proceedings /$fedited by Roberto Verdone 205 $a1st ed. 2008. 210 1$aBerlin, Heidelberg :$cSpringer Berlin Heidelberg :$cImprint: Springer,$d2008. 215 $a1 online resource (XIII, 390 p.) 225 1 $aComputer Communication Networks and Telecommunications,$x2945-9184 ;$v4913 300 $aIncludes index. 311 08$a3-540-77689-3 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aBest Papers -- Clustering-Based Minimum Energy Wireless m-Connected k-Covered Sensor Networks -- Activity Recognition from On-Body Sensors: Accuracy-Power Trade-Off by Dynamic Sensor Selection -- Predictive Modeling-Based Data Collection in Wireless Sensor Networks -- Localization -- Distributed Inference for Network Localization Using Radio Interferometric Ranging -- Speed, Reliability and Energy Efficiency of HashSlot Communication in WSN Based Localization Systems -- Detection of Space/Time Correlated Events -- Spatiotemporal Anomaly Detection in Gas Monitoring Sensor Networks -- Discovery of Frequent Distributed Event Patterns in Sensor Networks -- Tracking Dynamic Boundary Fronts Using Range Sensors -- Network Coding -- Network-Coding-Based Cooperative Transmission in Wireless Sensor Networks: Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff and Coverage Area Extension -- Resilient Coding Algorithms for Sensor Network Data Persistence -- Zigbee -- Radio Characterization of 802.15.4 and Its Impact on the Design of Mobile Sensor Networks -- Analysis of Audio Streaming Capability of Zigbee Networks -- Efficient Resource Estimation During Mass Casualty Emergency Response Based on a Location Aware Disaster Aid Network -- Topology -- Efficient Clustering for Improving Network Performance in Wireless Sensor Networks -- Lifetime Maximization in Wireless Sensor Networks by Distributed Binary Search -- An Algorithm for Reconnecting Wireless Sensor Network Partitions -- Software -- Typhoon: A Reliable Data Dissemination Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks -- FiGaRo: Fine-Grained Software Reconfiguration for Wireless Sensor Networks -- NanoECC: Testing the Limits of Elliptic Curve Cryptography in Sensor Networks -- Deployment and Application Development -- Characterizing Mote Performance: A Vector-Based Methodology.-Que: A Sensor Network Rapid Prototyping Tool with Application Experiences from a Data Center Deployment -- Device Driver Abstraction for Multithreaded Sensor Network Operating Systems -- A Component Framework for Content-Based Publish/Subscribe in Sensor Networks. 330 $aThis book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th European Workshop on Wireless Sensor Networks, EWSN 2008, held in Bologna, Italy, in January/February 2008.
