What does it mean to see musically? This volume uncovers a new side to the long nineteenth century in London, a hidden history in which virtuosic musical entertainment and scientific discovery intersected in remarkable ways. Sound Knowledge examines how scientific truth was accrued by means of visual and aural experience, and, in turn, how musical knowledge was located in relation to empirical scientific practice. James Q. Davies and Ellen Lockhart gather work by leading scholars to explore a crucial sixty-year period, beginning with Charles Burney's ambitious General History of Music, a four-volume study of music around the globe, and extending to the Great Exhibition of 1851, where musical instruments were assembled alongside the technologies of science and industry in the immense glass-encased collections of the Crystal Palace. Importantly, as the contributions show, both the power of science and the power of music relied on performance, spectacle, and experiment. Ultimately, this volume sets the stage for a new picture of modern disciplinarity, shining light on an era before the division of aural and visual knowledge. 606 $aMusic and science$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aMusic and science$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aMusic$zEngland$zLondon$y18th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aMusic$zEngland$zLondon$y19th century$xHistory and criticism 606 $aScience$zEngland$zLondon$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aScience$zEngland$zLondon$xHistory$y19th century 610 $aLondon. 610 $ahistory of listening. 610 $amusic. 610 $anatural philosophy. 610 $anineteenth-century. 610 $apolitical economy. 610 $ascience. 610 $asound studies. 610 $aspectacle. 615 0$aMusic and science$xHistory 615 0$aMusic and science$xHistory 615 0$aMusic$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aMusic$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aScience$xHistory 615 0$aScience$xHistory 676 $a780/.05 702 $aDavies$b James Q., 702 $aLockhart$b Ellen, 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910159026303321 996 $aSound Knowledge$92060363 997 $aUNINA LEADER 00814nam0-2200277 --450 001 9910764601303321 005 20231211112454.0 010 $a978-88-99937-65-2 100 $a20231211d2021----kmuy0itay5050 ba 101 0 $aita 102 $aIT 105 $ay 001yy 200 1 $a<>occultismo contemporaneo$ele sue dottrine e i suoi diversi sistemi$fCharles Godard 210 $aNapoli$cStamperia del Valentino$d2021 215 $a95 p.$d17 cm 225 1 $a<>Polifemi$v24 610 0 $aOccultismo 676 $a130$v23$zita 700 1$aGodard,$bCharles$f<1860-1912>$0507390 801 0$aIT$bUNINA$gREICAT$2UNIMARC 901 $aBK 912 $a9910764601303321 952 $aCollez. 3254 (24)$b1545/2023$fFSPBC 959 $aFSPBC 996 $aOccultismo contemporaneo$93645196 997 $aUNINA
