A sufficient number of migrants arrived from France and Africa to create settlements, establish economies of production, develop networks of exchange and trade, and adapt institutions of government and law to give substance and form to their resulting societies. Elusive Empire was the first full account of how during these years French settlers came to the Americas. It examines how they and thousands of African slaves together with Amerindians constructed settlements and produced and traded commodities for export. Bringing together much evidence, the author explores how the newly constructed societies and new economies, without precedent in France, interacted with the growing international violence in the Atlantic world in order to present a fresh perspective of the multifarious French colonizing experience in the Americas. 606 $aFrench$zAmerica$xHistory$y17th century 606 $aFrench$zAmerica$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aFrontier and pioneer life$zAmerica 607 $aFrance$xColonies$zAmerica 607 $aAmerica$xHistory$yTo 1810 607 $aAmerica$xEthnic relations 615 0$aFrench$xHistory 615 0$aFrench$xHistory 615 0$aFrontier and pioneer life 676 $a970/0971244 700 $aPritchard$b James S.$f1939-2015,$0850883 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910457925203321 996 $aIn search of empire$91899800 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01457nam 2200409zu 450 001 9910764244003321 005 20231219184618.0 010 $a94-93296-26-1 024 7 $a10.54195/FLRI3273 035 $a(CKB)29295103200041 035 $a(EXLCZ)9929295103200041 100 $a20231211d2023uuuu my 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aBeyond the Spirit of Bandung $ePhilosophies of National Unity: Secular or Religious?/$fedited by Frans Dokman and Antoinette Kankindi 210 1$aNijmegen :$cRadboud University Press,$d[2023] 210 4$dİ2023 215 $a1 online resource (249 pages) 225 1 $aNijmegen studies in development and cultural change ;$v56 300 $aThis book is dedicated to Prof. Dr. Frans Wijsen on the occasion of his retirement as professor at Radboud University, Nijmegen 410 0$aNijmegen studies in development and cultural change ;$v56 606 $aRegionalism$zAsia 606 $aAfro-Asian politics 607 $aAsia$xForeign relations 615 0$aRegionalism 615 0$aAfro-Asian politics. 676 $a172/.42 702 $aKankindi$b Antoinette 702 $aDokman$b Frans$f1963-$4edt 702 $aWijsen$b Frans Jozef Servaas$f1956-$4hnr 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910764244003321 996 $aBeyond the Spirit of Bandung$93653938 997 $aUNINA
