Weight stigma and weight bias are misunderstood issues, and often underestimated in terms of their prevalence and effect by society at large. The author examines topics including the role of power and persuasion, the use of metaphor, the personal stories of members of the general public, and the gendered real-life consequences of arbitrary weight standards to provide a linguistic driven study of obesity in news media. Obesity is an issue which sits at the intersection of science and the humanities, and as such, although the research methods used are firmly situated within the field of Linguistics, this book will also be ofinterest to readers from fields as diverse as Sociology, Fat Studies, Media Studies, Medicine and Psychology. Tara Coltman-Patel is a Senior Research Associate in the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University, UK. . 606 $aLinguistics$xMethodology 606 $aHuman body$xSocial aspects 606 $aJournalism 606 $aHealth 606 $aSex 606 $aKnowledge, Sociology of 606 $aSociolinguistics 606 $aResearch Methods in Language and Linguistics 606 $aSociology of the Body 606 $aNews Journalism 606 $aGender and Health 606 $aSociology of Knowledge and Discourse 606 $aSociolinguistics 615 0$aLinguistics$xMethodology. 615 0$aHuman body$xSocial aspects. 615 0$aJournalism. 615 0$aHealth. 615 0$aSex. 615 0$aKnowledge, Sociology of. 615 0$aSociolinguistics. 615 14$aResearch Methods in Language and Linguistics. 615 24$aSociology of the Body. 615 24$aNews Journalism. 615 24$aGender and Health. 615 24$aSociology of Knowledge and Discourse. 615 24$aSociolinguistics. 676 $a616.398 700 $aColtman-Patel$b Tara$01437900 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910760278003321 996 $aMis)Representing Weight and Obesity in the British Press$93598726 997 $aUNINA
