Pour reconstituer la bibliothèque réelle de Flaubert, nous disposons de trois sortes d'inventaires, reproduits ici dans leur intégralité : d'abord (par ordre de publication) le catalogue de la bibliothèque conservée actuellement à l'Hôtel de Ville de Canteleu, commune dont dépend Croisset ; ensuite l'inventaire après décès de Flaubert, dressé par le notaire Bidault en mai 1880, et dont une bonne moitié est consacrée à l'enregistrement des livres ; enfin les sections regroupant les numéros des livres dans les deux catalogues de la succession Franklin Grout, établis l'un pour la vente d'Antibes les 28, 29 et 30 avril 1931, l'autre pour la vente à l'Hôtel Drouot, les 18-19 novembre 1931.
