This book studies what makes musical stars so specific from the 1930s on: their performances, especially solo, which also reveal how film musicals tackle highbrow and popular culture. Acts by Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Rita Hayworth, Barbra Streisand, Carmen Miranda, Eleanor Powell, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Eddie Cantor, Doris Day and the Nicholas Brothers are analyzed according to four main issues: the role of technology in cinema-made performances (editing, dubbing...); ethnicity issues and the distinctive place that the musical genre granted - or not - to "non-white" artists; the importance of stars specialized in comedy who developed a carnivalesque dimension in films; and the process of star construction itself within the Hollywood system, in relation to other forms of performance or cultural industries. 606 $aDance$2bicssc 606 $aFilm, TV & radio$2bicssc 606 $aFilms, cinema$2bicssc 610 $acinema 610 $adance 610 $amusical 615 7$aDance 615 7$aFilm, TV & radio 615 7$aFilms, cinema 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910743285203321 996 $aStar Turns in Hollywood Musicals$93560368 997 $aUNINA LEADER 00700nas 2200265zu 450 001 9911050229103321 005 20260110150120.0 011 $a2183-2188 035 $a(CKB)44911519900041 035 $a(EXLCZ)9944911519900041 100 $a20260110cuuuuuuuu || | 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 200 00$aDiffractions 210 $aPortugal: $cUniversidade Católica Portuguesa 610 0$acultural studies 610 0$acritical theory 610 0$acomparative literature 610 0$atranslation studies 610 0$apostcolonial studies 610 0$avisual culture 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9911050229103321 996 $aDiffractions$94523657 997 $aUNINA
