First, it establishes how and why the Norman rulers of Sicily, all of whom were Christians, incorporated Muslim soldiers, farmers, scholars, and bureaucrats into the formation of their own royal identities and came to depend on their Muslim subjects to project and enforce their political power. Second, it examines how the Islamic influence within the Sicilian court drew little scrutiny, and even less criticism, from intellectuals in the wider world of Latin Christendom during the time period. Finally, it contextualizes and explains the eventual emergence of Christian popular violence against Muslims in Sicily in the latter half of the twelfth century and the evolution of a wider discourse of anti-Islamic sentiment throughout Western Europe. 606 $aItaly?History 606 $aEurope?History?476-1492 606 $aReligion?History 606 $aIslam 606 $aHistory of Italy 606 $aHistory of Medieval Europe 606 $aHistory of Religion 606 $aIslam 615 0$aItaly?History. 615 0$aEurope?History?476-1492. 615 0$aReligion?History. 615 0$aIslam. 615 14$aHistory of Italy. 615 24$aHistory of Medieval Europe. 615 24$aHistory of Religion. 615 24$aIslam. 676 $a945 700 $aBirk$b Joshua C$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01424910 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910741154103321 996 $aNorman Kings of Sicily and the Rise of the Anti-Islamic Critique$93554541 997 $aUNINA
