Intolerance and hate-based violence is on the rise in countries from Hungary to South Africa, threatening global security. With Interdependent Yet Intolerant, Robert Mandel explains why we live in an unexpectedly and increasingly hateful world, why existing policies have done little to help, and what needs to be done. Through an in-depth analysis of case studies from twelve diverse countries that have experienced violence between native citizens and foreign migrants, Mandel finds that the interdependence of the current liberal international order does not breed mutual understanding between groups through increased contact, but rather, under specific conditions, stimulates boomerang effects in the exact opposite direction. And the very policy measures intended to decrease violence?from heightened border enforcement intended to minimize instability, to intergovernmental payoffs to other countries to keep foreigners away, as in the EU?only inflame intolerance and promote global insecurity. Providing practical policy recommendations for managing identity-based violence in an age of mass migration and globalization, Interdependent Yet Intolerant calls on societies around the world to rethink their predominant notions of national identity and control. 606 $aEmigration and immigration$xSocial aspects 606 $aViolence 606 $aHate crimes 608 $aElectronic books. 610 $aCosmopolitanism. 610 $aGlobalization. 610 $aInsecurity. 610 $aInterdependence. 610 $aIntolerance. 610 $aNationalism. 610 $aNativism. 610 $aTribalism. 610 $aViolence. 610 $aXenophobia. 615 0$aEmigration and immigration$xSocial aspects. 615 0$aViolence. 615 0$aHate crimes. 676 $a362.8991 700 $aMandel$b Robert$f1949-$01108223 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910554263703321 996 $aInterdependent yet intolerant$92820058 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01028nam 2200337Ia 450 001 996385136203316 005 20200824132553.0 035 $a(CKB)4940000000075221 035 $a(EEBO)2264197546 035 $a(OCoLC)ocm12131362e 035 $a(OCoLC)12131362 035 $a(EXLCZ)994940000000075221 100 $a19850607d1662 uy | 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurbn||||a|bb| 200 14$aThe fixed saint$b[electronic resource] $eheld forth in a farwell sermon preached at Mary-Aldermanbury, London, August 17, 1662 /$fMr. Edmond Calamy 210 $aLondon $c[s.n.]$d1662 215 $a[4], 18 p 300 $aReproduction of original in Union Theological Seminary Library, New York. 330 $aeebo-0160 606 $aFarewell sermons 615 0$aFarewell sermons. 700 $aCalamy$b Edmund$f1600-1666.$01002065 801 0$bEAA 801 1$bEAA 801 2$bm/c 801 2$bWaOLN 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996385136203316 996 $aThe fixed saint$92395394 997 $aUNISA LEADER 00960nam0-2200301 --450 001 9910731900703321 005 20230710131542.0 010 $a9780415717571$bhardback 010 $a9781138482883$bpaperback 100 $a20230710d2016----kmuy0itay5050----ba 101 0 $aeng 102 $aGB 105 $a 001yy 200 1 $a<>Routledge history of American foodways$fedited by Michael D.
