Stewart-Steinberg argues that because Anna Freud inherited and guided her father's psychoanalytic project as an institution, analysis of her thought is critical to our understanding of the relationship between the psychoanalytic and the political. This is particularly the case given that many psychoanalysts and historians of psychiatry charge that Anna Freud's emphasis on defending the supremacy of the ego against unconscious drives betrayed her father's work.Are the unconscious and the psychoanalytic project itself at odds with the stable ego deemed necessary to a democratic politics? Hannah Arendt famously (and influentially) argued that they are. But Stewart-Steinberg maintains that Anna Freud's critics (particularly disciples of Melanie Klein) have simplified her thought and misconstrued her legacy. Stewart-Steinberg looks at Anna Freud's work with wartime orphans, seeing that they developed subjectivity not by vertical (through the father) but by lateral, social ties. This led Anna Freud to revise her father's emphasis on Oedipal sexuality and to posit a revision of psychoanalysis that renders it compatible with democratic theory and practice. Stewart-Steinberg gives us an Anna Freud who "betrays" the father even as she protects his legacy and continues his work in a new key. 606 $aPsychoanalysis$xPolitical aspects 606 $aPsychoanalysis$xHistory 615 0$aPsychoanalysis$xPolitical aspects. 615 0$aPsychoanalysis$xHistory. 676 $a150.19/52092 700 $aStewart-Steinberg$b Suzanne$01562648 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910790263203321 996 $aImpious fidelity$93830447 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01577nas 2200505-a 450 001 9910731498303321 005 20241221110047.0 011 $a2292-8421 035 $a(CKB)954921338096 035 $a(CONSER)---86643204- 035 $a(MiFhGG)1487 035 $a(EXLCZ)99954921338096 100 $a19840118b19772017 --- a 101 0 $aeng 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aCanadian business 210 $aToronto $cCB Media$d1977- 215 $a1 online resource 300 $aTitle from cover. 300 $aNo. 6 each year is special "500" issue, 1979-1993 311 08$aPrint version: Canadian business (Toronto, Ont.) 0008-3100 (DLC) 86643204 (OCoLC)10310521 517 1 $aCanadian business technology 531 0 $aCan. bus. 606 $aIndustries$zCanada$vPeriodicals 606 $aIndustrie$zCanada$vPériodiques 606 $aCommerce$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00869279 606 $aIndustries$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00971852 607 $aCanada$xCommerce$vPeriodicals 607 $aCanada$xCommerce$vPériodiques 607 $aCanada$2fast$1https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJkMHVW4rfVXPrhVP4VwG3 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2lcgft 615 0$aIndustries 615 6$aIndustrie 615 7$aCommerce. 615 7$aIndustries. 676 $a380.1/0971 686 $acci1icc$2lacc 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910731498303321 920 $aexl_impl conversion 996 $aCanadian business$92298046 997 $aUNINA
