(2001-05) -- Forward to the past (2006-beyond). 330 $aSince the mid-1950s, successive Canadian governments have grappled with the issue of Canada's role in US ballistic missile defence programs. Until Paul Martin's government finally said no, policy-makers responded to US initiatives with fear and uncertainty as they endlessly debated the implications ? at home and abroad ? of participation. However, whether this is the end of the story remains to be seen. Drawing on previously classified government documents and interviews with senior officials, James Fergusson examines Canada's policy deliberations during five major US initiatives. He reveals that a combination of factors such as weak leadership and a tendency to place uncertain and ill-defined notions of international peace and security before national defence resulted in indecision on what role Canada would play in ballistic missile defence. In effect, policy-makers have failed to transform debates about the issue into an opportunity to define Canada's strategic interests at home and on the world stage. Canada and Ballistic Missile Defense is the first comprehensive account of Canada's response and indecision regarding US ballistic missile defence initiatives, and the implications of this inaction. 606 $aBallistic missile defenses$zCanada$xHistory 606 $aNational security$zCanada$xHistory 607 $aCanada$xMilitary policy 607 $aCanada$xPolitics and government$y20th century 607 $aCanada$xPolitics and government$y21st century 607 $aCanada$xMilitary relations$zUnited States 607 $aUnited States$xMilitary relations$zCanada 615 0$aBallistic missile defenses$xHistory. 615 0$aNational security$xHistory. 676 $a358.1/740971 700 $aFergusson$b James G$g(James Gordon),$f1954-$01669504 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910821383503321 996 $aCanada and ballistic missile defence, 1954-2009$94030707 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02890nas 2200913-a 450 001 9910154494203321 005 20240501213015.0 035 $a(CKB)954927737761 035 $a(CONSER)sn-95038535- 035 $a(EXLCZ)99954927737761 100 $a19950617a19929999 --- - 101 0 $aeng 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aPrescrire international 210 $aParis $cAssociation mieux prescrire$d[1992]- 215 $a1 online resource 300 $aTitle from caption. 311 08$aPrint version: Prescrire international. 1167-7422 (DLC)sn 95038535 (OCoLC)32667453 531 $aPRESCRIRE INT 606 $aDrugs$xEffectiveness$vPeriodicals 606 $aDrugs$xPhysiological effect$vPeriodicals 606 $aDrugs$xTesting$vPeriodicals 606 $aChemotherapy$vPeriodicals 606 $aDrugs$vPeriodicals 606 $aPharmacy$vPeriodicals 606 $aChemotherapy 606 $aDrugs 606 $aDrug Evaluation 606 $aDrug Therapy 606 $aPharmaceutical Preparations 606 $aMédicaments$vPériodiques 606 $aChimiothérapie$vPériodiques 606 $aPharmacie$vPériodiques 606 $aMédicaments$xEfficacité$vPériodiques 606 $aMédicaments$xEffets physiologiques$vPériodiques 606 $aMédicaments$xEssais cliniques$vPériodiques 606 $aChimiothérapie 606 $aMédicaments 606 $aPharmacy$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01060285 606 $aDrugs$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00898761 606 $aChemotherapy$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00853595 606 $aDrugs$xEffectiveness$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00898808 606 $aDrugs$xPhysiological effect$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00898862 606 $aDrugs$xTesting$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00898940 608 $aPeriodical. 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2lcgft 615 0$aDrugs$xEffectiveness 615 0$aDrugs$xPhysiological effect 615 0$aDrugs$xTesting 615 0$aChemotherapy 615 0$aDrugs 615 0$aPharmacy 615 0$aChemotherapy. 615 0$aDrugs. 615 2$aDrug Evaluation. 615 2$aDrug Therapy. 615 2$aPharmaceutical Preparations. 615 6$aMédicaments 615 6$aChimiothérapie 615 6$aPharmacie 615 6$aMédicaments$xEfficacité 615 6$aMédicaments$xEffets physiologiques 615 6$aMédicaments$xEssais cliniques 615 6$aChimiothérapie. 615 6$aMédicaments. 615 7$aPharmacy. 615 7$aDrugs. 615 7$aChemotherapy. 615 7$aDrugs$xEffectiveness. 615 7$aDrugs$xPhysiological effect. 615 7$aDrugs$xTesting. 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910154494203321 920 $aexl_impl conversion 996 $aPrescrire international$91953629 997 $aUNINA
