As war approached, the internationalist movement attempted to arouse the nation in order to defeat noninterventionism at home and fascism overseas. Johnstone's examination of this movement undermines the common belief that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor wrenched an isolationist United States into global armed conflict and the struggle for international power.Johnstone focuses on three organizations-the American Committee for Non-Participation in Japanese Aggression, the Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies, and Fight For Freedom-that actively promoted a more global role for the United States based on a conception of the "four freedoms" later made famous by FDR. The desire to be free from fear was seen in concerns regarding America's immediate national security. The desire to be free from want was expressed in anxieties over the nation's future economic prosperity. The need for freedom of speech was represented in concerns over the potential loss of political freedoms. Finally, the need for freedom of worship was seen in the emphasis on religious freedoms and broader fears about the future of Western civilization. These groups and their supporters among the public and within the government characterized the growing global conflict as one between two distinct worlds and in doing so, set the tone of American foreign policy for decades to come. 606 $aInternationalism$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aNeutrality$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aPublic opinion$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aUnited States$xForeign relations$y1933-1945$xPublic opinion 615 0$aInternationalism$xHistory 615 0$aNeutrality$xHistory 615 0$aPublic opinion$xHistory 676 $a327.73009/04 700 $aJohnstone$b Andrew$g(Andrew E.),$0472413 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910820751603321 996 $aAgainst immediate evil$93979169 997 $aUNINA LEADER 06108nam 22005415 450 001 9910728384803321 005 20251113180258.0 010 $a9783031340451 010 $a3031340450 024 7 $a10.1007/978-3-031-34045-1 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC30554424 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL30554424 035 $a(OCoLC)1381093709 035 $a(DE-He213)978-3-031-34045-1 035 $a(BIP)091289318 035 $a(PPN)270613862 035 $a(CKB)26801495200041 035 $a(EXLCZ)9926801495200041 100 $a20230529d2023 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aKnowledge Management in Organisations $e17th International Conference, KMO 2023, Bangkok, Thailand, July 24?27, 2023, Proceedings /$fedited by Lorna Uden, I-Hsien Ting 205 $a1st ed. 2023. 210 1$aCham :$cSpringer Nature Switzerland :$cImprint: Springer,$d2023. 215 $a1 online resource (445 pages) 225 1 $aCommunications in Computer and Information Science,$x1865-0937 ;$v1825 311 08$aPrint version: Uden, Lorna Knowledge Management in Organisations Cham : Springer,c2023 9783031340444 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aKnowledge Transfer & Sharing -- Startups Knowledge Sharing Through Entrepreneurial Networks and The Catalytic Role of Incubators -- Exploring the startups' paths for knowledge sharing in an emerging economy: a multilevel analysis -- Knowledge Gaps Implementing Electronic Content Management in the Third Sector -- Knowledge sharing during natural disasters: key characteristics of social media enablement -- Knowledge in Business & Organisation -- Telework Experience and Frequency, and Knowledge Management during COVID-19 in Japan -- What is the Impact of Employees' Knowledge and Competencies on Building Sustainable Businesses?
