For two years Mark L. Winston traveled this fraught territory at home and abroad, listening to farmers, industry spokespeople, regulators, and researchers, canvassing high-security laboratories, environmentalist enclaves, and cyberspace, making a thorough survey of the facts, opinions, and practices deployed by opponents and proponents of transgenic crops. Through his sympathetic portrayal of the passions on all sides, Winston brings a clear, unbiased perspective to this bewildering landscape. Traveling with Winston, we see the excitement and curiosity that pervade laboratories developing genetically modified crops, as well as the panic and outrage among dedicated opponents of agricultural biotechnology; the desperation of conventional farmers as they look to science for solutions to the problems driving them from their farms, as well as the deeply held values of organic farmers who dread the incursion of genetically modified crops into their expanding enterprise. And, Winston shows us, these contrasting attitudes transcend national borders, with troubling counterparts and consequences in the developing world. As he seeks a middle ground where concerns about genetic engineering can be rationally discussed and resolved, Winston gives us, at long last, a full and balanced view of the forces at play in the chaotic debate over agricultural biotechnology. 606 $aFood$xBiotechnology 606 $aGenetically modified foods 606 $aAgricultural biotechnology 615 0$aFood$xBiotechnology. 615 0$aGenetically modified foods. 615 0$aAgricultural biotechnology. 676 $a664 700 $aWinston$b Mark L$086214 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910954103003321 996 $aTravels in the genetically modified zone$94351705 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02976nam 2200577I 450 001 9910725984103321 005 20221213125801.0 010 $a9781643150406 010 $a1643150405 024 7 $a10.3998/mpub.12668327 035 $a(CKB)5680000000301988 035 $a(MiU)10.3998/mpub.12668327 035 $a(OCoLC)1372561713 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)musev2_112349 035 $a(ScCtBLL)fcf075c6-c454-4ac8-b3ce-ef6e4c96a41a 035 $a(ODN)ODN0010989364 035 $a(EXLCZ)995680000000301988 100 $a20221213h20222022 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurunu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aLike a captive bird $egender and virtue in Plutarch /$fLunette Warren 210 1$aAmherst, Massachusetts :$cLever Press,$d[2022] 210 4$dİ2022 215 $a1 online resource (vii, 365 pages) 300 $aTitle from eBook information screen.. 311 08$a9781643150390 311 08$a1643150391 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (pages 339-365). 330 3 $aLike a Captive Bird examines the use of psychagogy, a set of therapeutic principles for achieving virtue, in Plutarch's work. Warren argues that Plutarch's work makes use of moral-educational literature to inculcate a gendered sense of self in the reader, and that this self is fundamentally concerned with the sex of the body, its reproductive role, and the conjugal relationship. Psychagogy is therefore a process of self-formation which aims to regulate and distribute power in gendered interactions on the basis of virtue. On this view, virtue is not just a disposition of the soul, it is also a set of rules and regulations for how one should act and interact with others, and this ties it inextricably to gender. Plutarch furthers this view in his theoretical-philosophical work, where he moves beyond the gender binary to a psychic scale of gender expression which figures normative gender as virtuous and non-normative gender as vicious. He then examines the implications of these views in the biographies. Warren therefore holds that Plutarch's views on women and gender across all genres are ideologically coherent, even if written at different stages of his life. 606 $aSex in literature 606 $aGender identity in literature 606 $aMoral exhortation$xIn literature$xHistory and criticism 606 $aVirtue in literature 615 0$aSex in literature. 615 0$aGender identity in literature. 615 0$aMoral exhortation$xIn literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aVirtue in literature. 676 $a888/.0108 676 $a184 686 $aLIT000000$aLIT004190$aLIT025050$2bisacsh 700 $aWarren$b Lunette$01359862 712 02$aLever Press, 801 0$bEYM 801 1$bEYM 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910725984103321 996 $aLike a captive bird$93375239 997 $aUNINA
