The root-mean-square values of rigid-airframe responses and tail-load responses were calculated at five flight conditions, and the behavior of these responses was observed in two autopilot modes: pitch-attitude-hold mode and altitude-control mode. It was found that pitch attitude and altitude can be controlled by the simple autopilot with acceptable or no increases in tail loads. 606 $aAerodynamic loads$2nasat 606 $aAtmospheric turbulence$2nasat 606 $aAutomatic pilot (Airplanes) 606 $aAirplanes$xHandling characteristics 606 $aAirplanes$xTail surfaces 606 $aAerodynamic load 606 $aAerodynamic load$2fast 606 $aAirplanes$xHandling characteristics$2fast 606 $aAirplanes$xTail surfaces$2fast 606 $aAtmospheric turbulence$2fast 606 $aAutomatic pilot (Airplanes)$2fast 615 7$aAerodynamic loads. 615 7$aAtmospheric turbulence. 615 0$aAutomatic pilot (Airplanes) 615 0$aAirplanes$xHandling characteristics. 615 0$aAirplanes$xTail surfaces. 615 0$aAerodynamic load. 615 7$aAerodynamic load. 615 7$aAirplanes$xHandling characteristics. 615 7$aAirplanes$xTail surfaces. 615 7$aAtmospheric turbulence. 615 7$aAutomatic pilot (Airplanes) 700 $aPerry$b Boyd$01389770 712 02$aUnited States.$bNational Aeronautics and Space Administration, 712 02$aLangley Research Center. 801 0$bABC 801 1$bABC 801 2$bAD# 801 2$bOCLCE 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bGPO 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910716544203321 996 $aThe effects of an autopilot on airplane responses to turbulence with emphasis on tail loads$93510622 997 $aUNINA
