Bauer brings together all available documents, testimonies, and scholarship, including previously unpublished material from the Yad Vashem archives, pertaining to nine representative shtetls. In line with his belief that "history is the story of real people in real situations," Bauer tells moving stories about what happened to individual Jews and their communities. Over a million people, approximately a quarter of all victims of the Holocaust, came from the shtetls. Bauer writes of the relations between Jews and non-Jews (including the actions of rescuers); he also describes attempts to create underground resistance groups, efforts to escape to the forests, and Jewish participation in the Soviet partisan movement. Bauer's book is a definitive examination of the demise of the shtetls, a topic of vast importance to the history of the Holocaust. 606 $aShtetls 606 $aJews$zEurope, Eastern$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aJews$zEurope, Eastern$xSocial conditions$y20th century 606 $aJews$zEurope, Eastern$xPolitics and government$y20th century 606 $aWorld War, 1939-1945$xJews 606 $aHolocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)$zEurope, Eastern 607 $aEurope, Eastern$xEthnic relations$xHistory$y20th century 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aShtetls. 615 0$aJews$xHistory 615 0$aJews$xSocial conditions 615 0$aJews$xPolitics and government 615 0$aWorld War, 1939-1945$xJews. 615 0$aHolocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) 676 $a305.892/404709041 700 $aBauer$b Yehuda$0241184 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910465252203321 996 $aThe death of the shtetl$92492736 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02725oam 2200697M 450 001 9910715559203321 005 20191121065731.2 035 $a(CKB)5470000002512462 035 $a(OCoLC)1065816882 035 $a(OCoLC)995470000002512462 035 $a(EXLCZ)995470000002512462 100 $a20070221d1830 ua 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aIndian treaties.
