The Greeks' historical encounter with this eastern king - which resulted, against overwhelming odds, in the defeat of the Persian army - has inspired a series of literary responses to Xerxes in which he is variously portrayed as the archetypal destructive and enslaving aggressor, as the epitome of arrogance and impiety, or as a figure synonymous with the exoticism and luxury of the Persian court. Imagining Xerxes is a transhistorical analysis that explores the richness and variety of Xerxes' afterlives within the ancient literary tradition. It examines the earliest representations of the king, in Aeschylus' tragic play Persians and Herodotus' historiographical account of the Persian Wars, before tracing the ways in which the image of Xerxes was revisited and adapted in later Greek and Latin texts. The author also looks beyond the Hellenocentric viewpoint to consider the construction of Xerxes' image in the Persian epigraphic record and the alternative perspectives on the king found in the Jewish written tradition. Analysing these diverse representations of Xerxes, this title explores the reception of a key figure in the ancient world and the reinvention of his image in a remarkable array of cultural and historical contexts 410 0$aBloomsbury Studies in Classical Reception 606 $2Ancient (Classical) Greek 607 $aGreece$xHistory$yPersian Wars, 500-449 B.C$xHistoriography 607 $aIran$xKings and rulers$vBiography 676 $a935/.705092 700 $aBridges$b Emma$01012166 801 0$bUtOrBLW 801 1$bUtOrBLW 801 2$bUkLoBP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910511750503321 996 $aImagining Xerxes$92550479 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02135nam 2200421 450 001 9910713879503321 005 20201210080802.0 035 $a(CKB)5470000002504896 035 $a(OCoLC)1190717592 035 $a(EXLCZ)995470000002504896 100 $a20200825d2020 ua 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 12$aA model-predictive hierarchical-control framework for aggregating residential DERs to provide grid regulation services /$fKumar Utkarsh [and four others] 210 1$aGolden, CO :$cNational Renewable Energy Laboratory,$d2020. 215 $a1 online resource (1 page) $ccolor illustrations 225 1 $aNREL/PO ;$v5D00-76093 300 $a"Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT 2020) North America, Washington, D.C., February 17-20, 2020." 300 $a"Funding provided by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) under Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) agreement number 34236." 517 3 $aModel-predictive hierarchical-control framework for aggregating residential distributed energy resources to provide grid regulation services 606 $aDistributed generation of electric power$zUnited States$xComputer simulation 606 $aElectric power distribution$zUnited States$xComputer simulation 606 $aDwellings$xPower supply$zUnited States$xComputer simulation 615 0$aDistributed generation of electric power$xComputer simulation. 615 0$aElectric power distribution$xComputer simulation. 615 0$aDwellings$xPower supply$xComputer simulation. 700 $aUtkarsh$b Kumar$01404414 712 02$aNational Renewable Energy Laboratory (U.S.), 712 02$aUnited States.$bDepartment of Energy.$bOffice of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, 801 0$bGPO 801 1$bGPO 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910713879503321 996 $aA model-predictive hierarchical-control framework for aggregating residential DERs to provide grid regulation services$93478942 997 $aUNINA
