Ferguson Prize sponsored by the Canadian Historical Association How were marital and sexual relationships woven into the fabric of late medieval society, and what form did these relationships take? Using extensive documentary evidence from both the ecclesiastical court system and the records of city and royal government, as well as advice manuals, chronicles, moral tales, and liturgical texts, Shannon McSheffrey focuses her study on England's largest city in the second half of the fifteenth century. Marriage was a religious union-one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church and imbued with deep spiritual significance-but the marital unit of husband and wife was also the fundamental domestic, social, political, and economic unit of medieval society. As such, marriage created political alliances at all levels, from the arena of international politics to local neighborhoods. Sexual relationships outside marriage were even more complicated. McSheffrey notes that medieval Londoners saw them as variously attributable to female seduction or to male lustfulness, as irrelevant or deeply damaging to society and to the body politic, as economically productive or wasteful of resources. Yet, like marriage, sexual relationships were also subject to control and influence from parents, relatives, neighbors, civic officials, parish priests, and ecclesiastical judges. Although by medieval canon law a marriage was irrevocable from the moment a man and a woman exchanged vows of consent before two witnesses, in practice marriage was usually a socially complicated process involving many people. McSheffrey looks more broadly at sex, governance, and civic morality to show how medieval patriarchy extended a far wider reach than a father's governance over his biological offspring. By focusing on a particular time and place, she not only elucidates the culture of England's metropolitan center but also contributes generally to our understanding of the social mechanisms through which premodern European people negotiated their lives. 606 $aMarriage$zEngland$zLondon$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aMarriage law$zEngland$zLondon$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aSex and law$zEngland$zLondon$xHistory$yTo 1500 607 $aLondon (England)$xSocial life and customs 610 $aGender Studies. 610 $aHistory. 610 $aMedieval and Renaissance Studies. 610 $aWomen's Studies. 615 0$aMarriage$xHistory 615 0$aMarriage law$xHistory 615 0$aSex and law$xHistory 676 $a306.8109421/20902 700 $aMcSheffrey$b Shannon$01183896 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910787527303321 996 $aMarriage, sex and civic culture in late medieval London$93697160 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03072nam 2200637 450 001 9910789380103321 005 20230803034602.0 010 $a0-8229-7911-X 035 $a(CKB)3710000000095277 035 $a(EBL)2039472 035 $a(OCoLC)862135493 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001036560 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11577012 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001036560 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11041946 035 $a(PQKB)11033117 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC2039472 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse27280 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL2039472 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10853008 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL586701 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000095277 100 $a20140407h20132013 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aTropic tendencies $erhetoric, popular culture, and the anglophone Caribbean /$fKevin Adonis Browne 210 1$aPittsburgh, Pennsylvania :$cUniversity of Pittsburgh Press,$d2013. 210 4$d©2013 215 $a1 online resource (230 p.) 225 1 $aPittsburgh Series in Composition, Literacy, and Culture 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a0-8229-6259-4 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references, discography and index. 327 $a""Contents""; ""Illustrations""; ""Acknowledgements""; ""Introduction: A Jour Overt""; ""Chapter 1.
