Après le départ des jésuites en 1762, l'établissement devient à partir de 1764 un collège préparatoire à l'École militaire de Paris. Il doit accueillir 250 jeunes nobles censés poursuivre ensuite une carrière militaire. Nommé par le secrétaire d'État à la Guerre, Dupont de La Motte rend compte dans son Journal tout d'abord de la vie à l'intérieur de l'établissement. Il évoque longuement les comportements des élèves à travers surtout leurs problèmes de santé, comme l'inoculation contre la variole, et la question de la discipline. L'attitude des enseignants et de l'administration est minutieusement décrite et critiquée. La gestion du collège (travaux, approvisionnements?), dont il est directement responsable, est analysée. L'inspecteur dresse aussi un tableau de la société fléchoise qu'il dépeint en des termes souvent acerbes, tout en cherchant à être admis parmi les « barons ». Il insiste sur les liens étroits qui unissent la ville et le collège. Enfin, lors de la dernière année, Dupont de La Motte condamne la disparition de l'établissement comme école préparatoire et la dispersion des élèves qui sont désormais confiés à des bénédictins, des oratoriens ou des minimes.
