Les « Souvenirs d'un nonagénaire », restitués pour la première fois dans leur intégralité, sont rédigés à l'extrême fin de sa vie. Cet écrit hybride, entre mémoires et confessions, témoigne d'une époque ouverte à tous les possibles, à la jonction des époques moderne et contemporaine. La lecture de ses mémoires nous convie à la naissance du citoyen Besnard pétri par les Lumières. Besnard fait le pari d'une société éclairée. Ce notable rural privilégié qui voit le monde de manière idéalisé, se transforme en acteur. Le Directoire, après Thermidor, dessine un avenir conforme à ses idéaux. Besnard, républicain modéré, expérimente son rêve de construction d'une société nouvelle. Il est d'abord un intermédiaire entre Paris et la Sarthe puis il est imposé par ses amis La Réveillère-Lépeaux et Volney à la tête de la municipalité du Mans et du département de la Sarthe. Usé, dépassé, désabusé, il disparaît de la scène publique en mai 1799. Sous la plume de François-Yves Besnard renaît la douceur de l'Ancien Régime, d'abord au prieuré de Saint-Aubin des Alleuds en Anjou puis au séminaire d'Angers et enfin à la cure de Nouans dans le Maine. La lecture de ces « Souvenirs » est indispensable pour mesurer le schisme provoqué par la Constitution Civile du Clergé, et comprendre les luttes politiques sarthoises sous le Directoire.
