It examines the explosive threats the liberal order confronts today: financial meltdown, religious extremism, environmental catastrophe. Yet, it also seeks to place these - singularly modern - crises within a much longer history. For the contributors to this collection, it is the ancient religious tradition called 'the messianic' that provides the critical lens through which modernity may be interrogated. In its ongoing struggles with the messianic, liberal modernity confronts the promise and threat of a radically new Politics to Come. So what are the Politics to Come? How do they manifest themselves throughout history? Why does the possibility of a messianic judgement continue to haunt the western political imaginary? This collection offers a series of political, philosophical and theological perspectives from which the future of liberal modernity - if it has one - can be imagined."--Bloomsbury Publishing. 410 0$aContinuum Studies in Religion & Political Culture, 3 606 $aMessiah 606 $aPhilosophy, Modern 606 $aPolitical science$xPhilosophy 606 $aReligion and politics 606 $2Religion & politics 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aMessiah. 615 0$aPhilosophy, Modern. 615 0$aPolitical science$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aReligion and politics. 676 $a201/.72 702 $aBradley$b Arthur 702 $aFletcher$b Paul 801 0$bUtOrBLW 801 1$bUtOrBLW 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910456705603321 996 $aThe politics to come$91952765 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02359nam 2200541I 450 001 9910703994603321 005 20150903143531.0 035 $a(CKB)5470000002435791 035 $a(OCoLC)918948701 035 $a(EXLCZ)995470000002435791 100 $a20150819j199409 ua 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurbn||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aDocumentation of the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) General Circulation Model, version 1 /$fLawrence L. Conclusion --$tNotes --$tIndex 330 $aWar, Memory, and the Politics of Humor features carnage and cannibalism, gender and cross-dressing, drunks and heroes, militarism and memory, all set against the background of World War I France. Allen Douglas shows how a new satiric weekly, the Canard Enchaîné, exploited these topics and others to become one of France's most influential voices of reaction to the Great War. The Canard, still published today, is France's leading satiric newspaper and the most successful periodical of the twentieth century, and Douglas colorfully illuminates the mechanisms of its unique style. Following the Canard from its birth in 1915 to the eve of the Great Depression, the narrative reveals a heady mix of word play, word games, and cartoons. Over the years the journal--generally leftist, specifically antimilitarist and anti-imperialist--aimed its shots in all directions, using some stereotypes the twenty-first century might find unacceptable. But Douglas calls its humor an affirmation of life, and as such the most effective antidote to war. 606 $aWorld War, 1914-1918$vHumor 606 $aFrench wit and humor$xHistory and criticism 606 $aSatire, French$xHistory and criticism 606 $aWorld War, 1914-1918$xPress coverage$zFrance 610 $a20th century. 610 $aarmistice. 610 $abattles. 610 $abodies. 610 $acanard enchaine. 610 $acannibalism. 610 $acarnage. 610 $acartoons. 610 $acorpses. 610 $acrossdressing. 610 $adissent. 610 $afrance. 610 $afree press. 610 $agender. 610 $agreat depression. 610 $agreat war. 610 $ahistory. 610 $ahumor. 610 $aimperialism. 610 $ainjured soldiers. 610 $ajournalism. 610 $aleftist politics. 610 $aliterary criticism. 610 $amilitarism. 610 $amilitary. 610 $anewspaper. 610 $aperiodicals. 610 $apolitical cartoons. 610 $apolitical commentary. 610 $apolitical speech. 610 $aprotest. 610 $asatire. 610 $asocial commentary. 610 $asoldier. 610 $awar hero. 610 $awar wounded. 610 $awar. 610 $aworld war one. 610 $aww1. 615 0$aWorld War, 1914-1918 615 0$aFrench wit and humor$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aSatire, French$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aWorld War, 1914-1918$xPress coverage 676 $a940.3/02/07 700 $aDouglas$b Allen$f1949-$01300366 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910780078503321 996 $aWar, memory, and the politics of humor$93755370 997 $aUNINA
