Despite growing interest in this field referred to as consumer health informatics (CHI), the value of CHI applications has not been rigorously reviewed. The objectives of this report were to review the literature on the evidence of the influence of currently developed CHI applications on health and health care process outcomes, to identify the gaps in the CHI literature, and to make recommendations for future CHI research. For the purposes of this review, CHI is defined as any electronic tool, technology, or electronic application that is designed to interact directly with consumers, with or without the presence of a health care professional that provides or uses individualized (personal) information and provides the consumer with individualized assistance, to help the patient better manage their health or health care."--P. 1. 410 0$aEvidence report/technology assessment ;$vno. 188. 410 0$aAHRQ publication ;$vno. 09(10)-E019. 606 $aMedical informatics$xCare 606 $aCommunication in medicine 606 $aPatients 606 $aMedical Informatics 606 $aHuman Rights 606 $aHealth Education 606 $aInformation Science 606 $aSocial Control, Formal 606 $aEducation, Nonprofessional 606 $aSociology 606 $aHealth Care Economics and Organizations 606 $aEducation 606 $aDelivery of Health Care 606 $aSocial Sciences 606 $aConsumer Advocacy 606 $aConsumer Health Information 606 $aMedical Informatics Applications 606 $aMedicine$2HILCC 606 $aHealth & Biological Sciences$2HILCC 606 $aMedical & Biomedical Informatics$2HILCC 615 0$aMedical informatics$xCare. 615 0$aCommunication in medicine. 615 0$aPatients. 615 2$aMedical Informatics. 615 2$aHuman Rights. 615 2$aHealth Education. 615 2$aInformation Science. 615 2$aSocial Control, Formal. 615 2$aEducation, Nonprofessional. 615 2$aSociology. 615 2$aHealth Care Economics and Organizations. 615 2$aEducation. 615 2$aDelivery of Health Care. 615 2$aSocial Sciences. 615 2$aConsumer Advocacy. 615 2$aConsumer Health Information. 615 2$aMedical Informatics Applications. 615 7$aMedicine 615 7$aHealth & Biological Sciences 615 7$aMedical & Biomedical Informatics 676 $a362.1 702 $aGibbons$b Michael Christopher 712 02$aUnited States Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality 712 02$aJohns Hopkins University Evidence-based Practice Center 801 0$bPQKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910703262703321 996 $aImpact of consumer health informatics applications$93215716 997 $aUNINA
