This policy brief is based on recent research that found a general negative and sensationalised attitude towards disfigurement in the media.Dsfigurement is a condition that can affect anyone at any time in life regardless their social or demographic background due to accidents or health conditions or be congenital. In the UK, one in 111 people have facial disfigurements. In order to improve the ways in which media portray disfigurement, this policy brief argues that media should move away from sensationalised coverage on disfigurement and focus instead on the lived experiences of individuals with this condition. It recommends strengthening diversity-oriented editorial practices and training as well as media literacy education. In addition, it addresses the lack of guidelines on the portrayal of disfigurement and urges regulatory bodies to be more efficient in handling complaints." 410 0$aCAMRI policy briefs ;$vVolume 3. 606 $aFace$xAbnormalities$xSocial aspects 606 $aDisfigured persons$xSocial aspects 606 $aMass media$xLaw and legislation$zGreat Britain 615 0$aFace$xAbnormalities$xSocial aspects. 615 0$aDisfigured persons$xSocial aspects. 615 0$aMass media$xLaw and legislation 676 $a343.41099 700 $aGarrisi$b Diana$0863669 702 $aJanciute$b Laima 702 $aJohanssen$b Jacob 801 0$bWaSeSS 801 1$bWaSeSS 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910282225803321 996 $aAppearance, discrimination and the media$91927731 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02028nam 2200469I 450 001 9910702661303321 005 20170109114207.0 035 $a(CKB)5470000002429575 035 $a(OCoLC)967941142 035 $a(EXLCZ)995470000002429575 100 $a20170109d2012 ua 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 14$aThe unauthorized movement of nuclear weapons and mistaken shipment of classified missile components $ean assessment /$fby Michelle Spencer, Aadina Ludin, Heather Nelson 210 1$aMaxwell Air Force Base, Alabama :$cUSAF Counterproliferation Center, Air University,$d2012. 215 $a1 online resource (viii, 90 pages) 225 1 $aThe counterproliferation papers.
