Violence has played, he shows, a crucial role in creating the institutions of a new market economy. The core of his work is competition among so-called violence-managing agencies-criminal groups, private security services, private protection companies, and informal protective agencies associated with the state-which multiplied with the liberal reforms of the early 1990s. This competition provides an unusual window on the dynamics of state formation. Violent Entrepreneurs is remarkable for its research. Volkov conducted numerous interviews with members of criminal groups, heads of protection companies, law enforcement employees, and businesspeople. He bases his findings on journalistic and anecdotal evidence as well as on his own personal observation. Volkov investigates the making of violence-prone groups in sports clubs (particularly martial arts clubs), associations for veterans of the Soviet-Afghan war, ethnic gangs, and regionally based social groups, and he traces the changes in their activities across the decade. Some groups wore state uniforms and others did not, but all of their members spoke and acted essentially the same and were engaged in the same activities: intimidation, protection, information gathering, dispute management, contract enforcement, and taxation. Each group controlled the same resource-organized violence. 606 $aOrganized crime$zRussia (Federation) 606 $aCapitalism$zRussia (Federation) 606 $aLaw enforcement$zRussia (Federation) 607 $aRussia (Federation)$xSocial conditions$y1991- 607 $aRussia (Federation)$xPolitics and government$y1991- 615 0$aOrganized crime 615 0$aCapitalism 615 0$aLaw enforcement 676 $a364.1/06/0947 700 $aVolkov$b Vadim$f1965-$01715857 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910823428403321 996 $aViolent entrepreneurs$94110797 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02518nas 2200625- 450 001 996332636403316 005 20230518213020.0 011 $a2049-775X 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2440694-6 035 $a(OCoLC)679041170 035 $a(CKB)110978984076157 035 $a(CONSER)--2020204377 035 $a(EXLCZ)99110978984076157 100 $a20101106a19849999 --- a 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aAustralian journal of environmental education 210 1$a[St. Lucia, Qld.] :$c[Australian Association for Environmental Education] 210 31$a[Cambridge] :$cCambridge University Press 215 $a1 online resource 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 311 $a0814-0626 606 $aEnvironmental education$vPeriodicals 606 $aEnvironmental education$zAustralia$vPeriodicals 606 $aConservation of natural resources$xStudy and teaching$vPeriodicals 606 $aConservation of natural resources$xStudy and teaching$zAustralia$vPeriodicals 606 $aEnvironnement$xÉtude et enseignement$zAustralie$vPériodiques 606 $aConservation des ressources naturelles$xÉtude et enseignement$zAustralie$vPériodiques 606 $aConservation des ressources naturelles$xÉtude et enseignement$vPériodiques 606 $aConservation of natural resources$xStudy and teaching$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00875552 606 $aEnvironmental education$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00912902 606 $aUmwelterziehung$2gnd 607 $aAustralia$2fast 607 $aAustralien$2gnd 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 608 $aZeitschrift$2swd 615 0$aEnvironmental education 615 0$aEnvironmental education 615 0$aConservation of natural resources$xStudy and teaching 615 0$aConservation of natural resources$xStudy and teaching 615 6$aEnvironnement$xÉtude et enseignement 615 6$aConservation des ressources naturelles$xÉtude et enseignement 615 6$aConservation des ressources naturelles$xÉtude et enseignement 615 7$aConservation of natural resources$xStudy and teaching. 615 7$aEnvironmental education. 615 7$aUmwelterziehung 676 $a333.7/16/0994 712 02$aAustralian Association for Environmental Education. 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a996332636403316 996 $aAustralian journal of environmental education$91896334 997 $aUNISA
