L?observation d?un corpus de 119 pièces montre que, paradoxalement, l?identité de ce répertoire semble se construire lorsque les textes ne s?adressent plus au « jeune public », mais à un « tout public » qu?il resterait à définir. En s?émancipant d?une volonté didactique, le texte établit en effet une relation égalitaire entre l?auteur adulte et le spectateur enfant. La conception moderne du spectateur de théâtre et celle de l?enfant dans la société lui demandent une participation à la construction du sens. Ce qui distingue alors ce répertoire du théâtre général se limite peut-être à une certaine façon de parler du monde, des choses compliquées avec simplicité, mais sans simplisme. La mise en question du personnage constitue aussi une caractéristique forte et nouvelle. Enfants, adultes et adolescents semblent chercher leur identité, au sein de ce qui deviendrait une problématique majeure : grandir. Bien plus, le spectateur enfant, nouveau pour le théâtre, incite souvent les auteurs à réfléchir sur la nature même du théâtre.
