For John Milton, Ben Jonson, William Prynne, Thomas Hobbes and others, the period between infancy and adulthood became a site of intense scrutiny, especially as they examined the role of a literary education in turning children into political actors. Drawing on new archival evidence, Blaine Greteman argues that coming of age in the seventeenth century was a uniquely political act. His study makes a compelling case for understanding childhood as a decisive factor in debates over consent, autonomy and political voice, and will offer graduate students and scholars a new perspective on the emergence of apolitical children's literature in the eighteenth century. 517 3 $aThe Poetics & Politics of Youth in Milton's England 606 $aEnglish literature$yEarly modern, 1500-1700$xHistory and criticism 606 $aChildren in literature 606 $aYouth in literature 606 $aChildren and politics$xHistory$y17th century 606 $aLiterature and society$zEngland$xHistory$y17th century 615 0$aEnglish literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aChildren in literature. 615 0$aYouth in literature. 615 0$aChildren and politics$xHistory 615 0$aLiterature and society$xHistory 676 $a820.9/354 700 $aGreteman$b Blaine$01475299 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910790402103321 996 $aThe poetics and politics of youth in Milton's England$93689465 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02130nam 2200541 450 001 9910819281903321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a0-7486-4907-7 035 $a(CKB)3710000000685056 035 $a(EBL)4538913 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4538913 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL4538913 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11237254 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL928661 035 $a(OCoLC)957436594 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000685056 100 $a20160812h20142014 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $2rdacontent 182 $2rdamedia 183 $2rdacarrier 200 10$aChildren's literature /$fM.
