Yet the city's speech has never before received a comprehensive description and analysis. In this book, Michael Newman examines the differences and similarities among the ways English is spoken by the extraordinarily diverse population living in the NY dialect region. He uses data from a variety of sources including older dialectological accounts, classic and recent variationist studies, and original research on speakers from around the dialect region. All levels of language are explored including phonology, morphosyntax, lexicon, and discourse along with a history of English in the region. But this book provides far more than a dialectological and historical inventory of linguistic features. The forms used by different groups of New Yorkers are discussed in terms of their complex social meanings. Furthermore, Newman illustrates the varied forms of sociolinguistic significance with examples from the personal experiences of a variety of New Yorkers and includes links to sound files on the publisher's site and videos on YouTube. The result is a rigorous but accessible and compelling account of the English spoken in this great city. 410 0$aDialects of English ;$vvolume 10. 606 $aEnglish language$xDialects$zNew York (State)$zNew York 607 $aNew York (State)$zNew York$2fast 607 $aNew York, NY$2gnd 610 $aDialects. 610 $aEnglish. 610 $aNew York City. 610 $aSociolinguistics. 615 0$aEnglish language$xDialects 676 $a427.97471 686 $aHF 980$2rvk 700 $aNewman$b Michael$0884009 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910815597103321 996 $aNew York City English$94012733 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01055nam a2200229 i 4500 001 991004329038507536 005 20240614121101.0 008 240614s2007 mx r 001 0 spa 020 $a9789707019621 040 $aBibl.
