Not just homes, schools, and other buildings but also lives must be reconstructed. Yet amid the horror there is also the opportunity to build back better, to create more resilient buildings and deeper human connections. After Haiti's 2010 earthquake, architect Paul E. Fallon wanted to help rebuild the magic island he had visited the previous summer. Over the next three years, he made seventeen trips to design and supervise construction of an orphanage and a school in Grand Goa?ve. In the process, he confronted the challenges of building in a country with sparse materials and with laborers predisposed toward magic over physics. Architecture by Moonlight is about much more than construction, however. Readers will also experience the many relationships Fallon developed as he balanced the contradictory demands of a boisterous American family constructing a memorial for their deceased daughter and Evangelical missionaries more interested in saving souls than filling bellies. Dieunison, a wily Haitian orphan, captured Fallon's heart and exemplifies both Haiti's tragedy and its indomitable spirit. Fallon's personal experience is an eloquent tale of "an ensemble of incomplete people struggling in a land of great trial and great promise, trying to better understand their place on Earth." He reveals how, when seemingly different people come together, we succeed by seeking our commonality. Architecture by Moonlight illustrates our strength to rise above disaster and celebrate recovery, perseverance, and humanity. 606 $aHaiti Earthquake, Haiti, 2010 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aHaiti Earthquake, Haiti, 2010. 676 $a972.94073 700 $aFallon$b Paul E.$0996589 702 $aHill$b Mindy Basinger 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910460328703321 996 $aArchitecture by moonlight$92284970 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01373nam 2200385Ia 450 001 9910698142103321 005 20050829110320.0 035 $a(CKB)4100000010247796 035 $a(OCoLC)61367005 035 $a(EXLCZ)994100000010247796 100 $a20050829d1996 ua 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $auran|---||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aAccounting for property, plant, and equipment$b[electronic resource] 210 1$a[Washington, D.C.] :$cFederal Accounting Standards Advisory Board,$d[1996] 225 1 $aStatement of federal financial accounting standards ;$vno. 6 300 $aTitle from title screen (viewed on Aug. 22, 2005). 300 $a"June 1996." 300 $aG.P.O. sales statement incorrect in publication. 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references. 606 $aGovernment property$xAccounting$xStandards$zUnited States 606 $aGovernment property$zUnited States$xFinance 606 $aPublic administration$zUnited States 615 0$aGovernment property$xAccounting$xStandards 615 0$aGovernment property$xFinance. 615 0$aPublic administration 801 0$bGPO 801 1$bGPO 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910698142103321 996 $aAccounting for property, plant, and equipment$93179789 997 $aUNINA
