She also demonstrates how alternative media creates 'alternative communications', and casts the whole media spectrum in a new light.$bHistorically, alternative media have been viewed as fundamental, albeit at times culturally peripheral, forces in social change. In this book, however, Kenix argues that these media do not uniformly subvert the hierarchies of access that are so central to mainstream media - in fact, their journalistic norms and routines have always been based on the professional standards of the mainstream. Kenix goes on to posit the perception of 'mainstream' and 'alternative' as a misconception. She argues that, although alternative media can - and do - construct distinct alternative communications, they have always existed on the same continuum as the mainstream and the two will continue to converge. Through comparative analysis, this book argues that many alternative and mainstream media are merging to create a continuous spectrum rooted in commercial ideology. Indeed, much of what is now considered alternative media actually draws very little from principles of the independent press, whereas many contemporary mainstream media now use communication techniques more commonly associated with media that do not operate for financial gain. This book puts forward a controversial but convincing argument around the relationship between alternative and mainstream media, drawing on examples from the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand to strengthen and develop the central premise. 517 $aAlternative and mainstream media 606 $aAlternative mass media 606 $aMass media 606 $aMedia Studies$2eflch 608 $aElectronic books.$2lcsh 615 0$aAlternative mass media. 615 0$aMass media. 615 7$aMedia Studies. 676 $a302.23 700 $aKenix$b Linda Jean$0801115 801 0$bStDuBDS 801 1$bStDuBDS 801 2$bStDuBDSZ 801 2$bUkPrAHLS 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910597896203321 996 $aAlternative and Mainstream Media$91802472 997 $aUNINA LEADER 05434nam 22008415 450 001 9910484562103321 005 20251226195418.0 010 $a3-540-68111-6 024 7 $a10.1007/978-3-540-68111-3 035 $a(CKB)1000000000440590 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000319336 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11246387 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000319336 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10337094 035 $a(PQKB)11777442 035 $a(DE-He213)978-3-540-68111-3 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3068520 035 $a(PPN)127048049 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000440590 100 $a20100301d2008 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurnn#008mamaa 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aParallel Processing and Applied Mathematics $e7th International Conference, PPAM 2007, Gdansk, Poland, September 9-12, 2007, Revised Selected papers /$fedited by Roman Wyrzykowski, Jack Dongarra, Konrad Karczewski, Jerzy Wasniewski 205 $a1st ed. 2008. 210 1$aBerlin, Heidelberg :$cSpringer Berlin Heidelberg :$cImprint: Springer,$d2008. 215 $a1 online resource (L, 1418 p.) 225 1 $aTheoretical Computer Science and General Issues,$x2512-2029 ;$v4967 300 $aBibliographic Level Mode of Issuance: Monograph 311 08$a3-540-68105-1 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aParallel/Distributed Architectures and Mobile Computing -- Numerical Algorithms and Parallel Numerics -- Parallel and Distributed Non-numerical Algorithms -- Environments and Tools for Parallel/Distributed/Grid Computing -- Applications of Parallel/Distributed/Grid Computing -- Evolutionary Computing, Meta-Heuristics and Neural Networks -- The Second Minisymposium on Novel Data Formats and Algorithms for Dense Linear Algebra Computations -- Combinatorial Tools for Parallel Sparse Matrix Computations Workshop -- The Third Grid Applications and Middleware Workshop (GAMW?07) -- The Third Workshop on Large Scale Computations on Grids (LaSCoG?07) -- Workshop on Models, Algorithms and Methodologies for Grid-Enabled Computing Environments -- Workshop on Scheduling for Parallel Computing (SPC?07) -- The Second Workshop on Language-Based Parallel Programming Models (WLPP?07) -- Workshop on Performance Evaluation of Parallel Applications on Large-Scale Systems -- Workshop on Parallel Computational Biology (PBC?2007) -- Workshop on High Performance Computing for Engineering Applications -- Minisymposium on Interval Analysis. 330 $aThis book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Parallel Processing and Applied Mathematics, PPAM 2007, held in Gdansk, Poland, in September 2007. The 63 revised full papers of the main conference presented together with 85 revised workshop papers were carefully reviewed and selected from over 250 initial submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on parallel/distributed architectures and mobile computing, numerical algorithms and parallel numerics, parallel and distributed non-numerical algorithms, environments and tools for as well as applications of parallel/distributed/grid computing, evolutionary computing, meta-heuristics and neural networks. The volume proceeds with the outcome of 11 workshops and minisymposia dealing with novel data formats and algorithms for dense linear algebra computations, combinatorial tools for parallel sparse matrix computations, grid applications and middleware, large scale computations on grids, models, algorithms and methodologies for grid-enabled computing environments, scheduling for parallel computing, language-based parallel programming models, performance evaluation of parallel applications on large-scale systems, parallel computational biology, high performance computing for engineering applications, and the minisymposium on interval analysis. 410 0$aTheoretical Computer Science and General Issues,$x2512-2029 ;$v4967 606 $aSoftware engineering 606 $aAlgorithms 606 $aComputer science$xMathematics 606 $aComputer storage devices 606 $aMemory management (Computer science) 606 $aComputer networks 606 $aMathematics$xData processing 606 $aSoftware Engineering 606 $aAlgorithms 606 $aMathematics of Computing 606 $aComputer Memory Structure 606 $aComputer Communication Networks 606 $aComputational Mathematics and Numerical Analysis 615 0$aSoftware engineering. 615 0$aAlgorithms. 615 0$aComputer science$xMathematics. 615 0$aComputer storage devices. 615 0$aMemory management (Computer science). 615 0$aComputer networks. 615 0$aMathematics$xData processing. 615 14$aSoftware Engineering. 615 24$aAlgorithms. 615 24$aMathematics of Computing. 615 24$aComputer Memory Structure. 615 24$aComputer Communication Networks. 615 24$aComputational Mathematics and Numerical Analysis. 676 $a004/.35 686 $a54.50$2bcl 701 $aWyrzykowski$b Roman$01754897 712 12$aPPAM 2007 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910484562103321 996 $aParallel processing and applied mathematics$94191410 997 $aUNINA
