Während über Kesslers Engagement in der Kunst viel publiziert worden ist, bleibt sein Verhältnis zur Literatur bislang beinahe unberücksichtigt. Dabei war er selbst literarisch aktiv: 1896 wurde sein Erstlingswerk 'Mein Mexico' veröffentlicht, dann die Libretti des Rosenkavalier und der Josephslegende, schließlich 'Gesichter und Zeiten', seine Memoiren.
